Bought a 82 firebird need some info/help
Im new to this forum so short story, I bought an 82' firebird with a 2.5 Iron duke Auto trans with original 61,000 miles. Car had sat for years, but it has been brought back to life. I already plan reworking the engine, new gaskets, seals, wires, etc.
My questions is cause I'm completely dumb founded on what the cause to this is. Well driving it for a few days it drove fine, but now when I drive her she gets this high pitch whistling noise from the engine, it starts in at 30 mph and dies under 30 mph. To best describe the noise it sounds like a turbo winding up.
If someone could be some help to this, its gratefully appreciated. I dont know If I should be concerned to this etc.
Thank you!

So the sound is only above 30 mph? Speed related, not RPM related? You can't recreate it in the garage while holding the RPM at different levels?
Do you have any ideas where the sound is coming from? If it's not RPM related, but rather, speed related, it's unlikely to be the engine itself, but rather driveline. Wheel bearings, etc. Have you gone over the car with a fine tooth comb yet since you've bought it? Checked all the fluids, all the belts, wheel bearings, etc?
Side note - You intend on "reworking" the engine- do you mean just fixing leaks and getting it running smooth to drive this daily, to/from work? Keep it original? Or are you looking for more oomph type of thing? If so, the Iron duke is a horrible platform to start with. Just curious what your intentions/goals/budget are for the car?

No matter how many rpms Im pushing it stills makes the sound above 30 mph, but today on my way to the store to pick up parts for the car it didnt do it all. This is why its so hard to determine cause. The sound comes from dead center in my hood, I know its not a belt those have been replaced prior to purchase of the car.
Hopefully after I rework the engine this solve my mystery noises( I plan on new gaskets, seals, lifters, head reworked, pcv valve, distributor cap and wires, coil. basically anything engine related that would done to a engine sitting 10+ years and also tranny filter and fluid change).
And about the iron duke, I know it was a bad idea for the camaro and firebird, I enjoyed the duke in my previous vega with a 4 speed. Though the firebird is a slug with the duke, I plan on keeping it the way it is, the car is too original to do any mods to it.
