A whole day and no suggestions.
If I knew a little bit more about your car I might be able to start guessing.
However all I know is that it's an 87 Iroc 305.
Aspiration type, engine condition (recent work or old and tired?), transmission type, any mysterious symptoms before?, any dtc codes. electrical gremlins?
You simply have to give more information to get help bud.
Good Luck.

i just got the car. it needs a valve job along with some valve cover gaskets. it surges on idle and its a 5 Speed. the sensor on the intake is missing a plug. nothing is plugged into it. the speedo doesnt work. and the rpm is reading way to high. i hope this helps

Well if the VSS is working (probably not BTW without a speedo) you will stall everytime you slow down. Engine doesn't since a load so it cuts the fuel back and you stall. Fix the speedometer.

I'll assume that you are fuel injected since you say the plug is missing from the intake.
That more than likely informs the ecm how much air is, or temp of the air going into the motor.
Vital information to keep the motor running good or even at all. This determines fuel input I'm sure by the computer.
I'm not sure about how bad the valve gunk has to be to make the car die in neutral. Probably run poor all the time if they were that bad. Assuming you mean they are carbon fouled.
I'd try to get that plug in place and see what changes if anything.
Then you can get continued help by further diagnosis.
I hope that's of help and makes sense.

The sensor on the intake is the MAF sensor. It measures incoming air and the ECM uses this info for fuel management. Without the MAF, the ECM runs in default memcal(limp mode). You need to figure out what is wrong with the sensor circuit. Why did the PO unplug it? Perform the diagnostic flow chart for code 33 or 34. Is the service engine light on? Does it come on when you turn on the key? Read codes by jumpng terminals A&B of the ALDL. If the light doesn't come on, the bulb may be out.

Hello, I'm new to the site so I hope I'm in the right section, heres my question. I have a 87 Z28 5.0L. And I just recently put in a new clutch, the folks at the parts store told me to use Dexron for my tranny. But now when I drive it I get this burning smell.... I'm thinking I should of used gear oil instead (because thats what came out of the tranny) or how long does my clutch take to adjust its self? Can some one please help me with this.

You should make your own thread to get help about this.
Anyways...why would you put gear oil in the transmission?
I've never heard of this before. Perhaps it's something that can be done to the 3rd gen tranny.
Transmission fluid is what should be in there. I use dexron because that's what the I've always used. I think gear oil would be too heavy a weigh.
perhaps I could be worng
The clutch burning could be improper adjustment or break in. It's been a long time since I dealt with a clutch. Burning smells are not good in clutches.
Good luck.
Post up your own topic and you will get better help.

Gear oil is too heavy for the T5. It will cause difficult shifting. Did you surface or replace the flywheel? Did you even clean the flywheel? Contamination may be causing the burning smell. That or improper clutch assembly or adjustment.
