Re: ticking sound
do you hear the ticking sound at idle? does it get louder and quicker as the RPMs rise?
for an exhaust leak it could be the manifold/header gaskets. i had it happen on my 00 and it was annoying/sounded terrible.
to check for that look around the manifolds/headers and see if you see any burn/scorch marks.
it could be a rocker or lifter. just take the valve covers off and check each rocker, you'll know if one is loose.
for a lifter, take a longer screwdriver or if you're fancy enough one of those stethascopes. listen around and if you hear it from the top end it could be a lifter, or a push rod.
for pushrods go back to the rockers and take them off, and pull out each rod and check if any are bent.

Re: ticking sound
test for exhaust leak around manifold or header: you will need one person to assist. First, borrow a cigarette from someone. At $5-$6 per pack why buy a pack. Then, with the engine OFF, lightly blow smoke around the header or manifold and watch the behavior. Do that on both sides. THen, ask the helper to start the engine and put it at about 1500 rpm's or so, again, lightly blow smoke but pay close attention. Do you see any of the smoke being diverted? If so, you have and found a leak.

Re: ticking sound
thank you, but at $6 per pack, and the fact that I don't smoke, why would I waste $6 for one cigarette????
seriously, you pick up a lot of tips from old timers over the years. It is then our duty to continue to pass them down to you young uns so you can continue the flow of data
