Super Chevy LG4 305 Build Up (New Issue)

Ok, since MANY of us in-fact have the little engine, and are on a budget I figured I would post this article out of the July 2010 issue of Super Chevy.
Block is an STOCK LG4 later roller cam version with 8.6:1 compression
Camshaft XM270HR (hyd. roller) 0.495/0.502 lift split 218/224 duration
on a 113 lobe sep. angle. (they say a 268XFI H13 cam with .570/.565 218/224 cam is a good substitute)
ProComp 1.5:1 aluminum roller rockers
Trick Flow Super 23 175 aluminum heads w/ 1.94/1.50 valves and 56cc combustion chambers. They state these heads are specifically for the 305 from TFS and the head gaskets are 305 specific Fel Pro versions.
Intake is a ProComp dual plane (high rise design)
Holley 750cfm carb on top with a Percys metering system (for dyno purposes this metering block makes it easier to tune, but same numbers are possible without this part.)

STK LG4 MOD LG4
RPM HP TQ HP TQ

6100 NA NA 358 308
6300 NA NA 349 291

ALL numbers were ran with an stock bottom end, electric water pump and with NO accessories and 1 3/4 long tube headers. Timing is 37* total.
They also say that 400HP IS POSSIBLE if they bumped the C.R. and put a bigger cam in there.
Still notice over 300ft. lbs. top to bottom alomst and OVER 340ft. lbs. from 3500 to 5500! With TPI I believe the HP would suffer on the top end, but the torque figures may very well be even higher. Drivebility would certainly be better. You can also take these heads and put them on a 350 later if you wanted to. Whats great about this column is the fact they actually stand up for the 305, saying it IS worth building and responds just like any other SBC with the right parts. They of course also say that IF you are going to rebuild, you are better of with a 350. I of course want to keep my 85 Z28 with the original block so this is a great write up for me. I am not looking to race my car, just have something that can hold its own and be a good driver. Just imagine a TPI with this and Nitrous, I bet over 500 ft lbs of TQ, easy.

Re: Super Chevy LG4 305 Build Up (New Issue)

I bought this mag, read this article, and was disappointed. The "Hate Me" 305 from a year or 2 back made better torque with heads that cost only half as much, and a non-roller cam with much less lift. This isn't an outstanding combination. The torque per dollar is nowhere close to the "Hate Me" 305.
You're better off doing the "Hate Me" 305 build but with a milder cam.

Re: Super Chevy LG4 305 Build Up (New Issue)

I was just posting the results for the Vortec vs TFS debate for 305 owners. I dont know if I would take the Vortec heads/base instead, and I know why you are disappointed. But the numbers arent that far off 353 vs 371 HP and the Super Chevy column actually beat the Hate Me 305 in in TQ. Not to mention the cam in the "hate me" write up is a stouter piece despite being a flat tappet. The "Hate Me" piece can also be more expensive since those heads were bought bare and after all the machining, and valvetrain WITH the Vortech base added in, it will TOP the TFS build when using TPI. I personally believe that both combo's leave a lot on the table, but never the less, they are both a nice set-up to make a 305 run.
