facing a tough decision

so recently i've realized i can't continue to restore my car at this time. as this age i just can't afford it, almost all of my money goes to the car and every step forward i take, i get kicked 3 back. if i was older it wouldn't be that much of a problem. it'd be one thing if the car was fine and i was just modding it, but that isnt the case.

right now i still live at home, but if i plan on moving out i'll need money and a reliable car. although i dont know if i can part with it. i'll obviously never get the money i put into it back.

i'd prefer to store it someplace for a few years if i can, i can't keep it at out property if i put the project on ice/get a new car.

any ideas of cheapish places to store/words of wisdom/ideas?

Re: facing a tough decision

If you do put it in a storage facility then check on it at least once a week. Buddy of mine put his mustang in over one winter and didn't check on it. Found out in the spring that someone went in there and swapped a bunch of junk parts on their mustang for his good parts. They even swapped a fender out on the dang thing!

Re: facing a tough decision

well you could sell it and just use the money i mean in the end once you get settled in with a reliable car and a place you could find another that already runs. But it is a tough decesion im kind of stuck in the same position of should i continue the build or give up since it really time consuming and money but in the end depends what you think is more important.

Re: facing a tough decision

The problem is that you will always or almost always regret selling the car. I know I regret selling my first third gen, my 2002 Firehawk, etc.

Re: facing a tough decision

yeah well i pretty much settled that my reliable car will be a 98-02 camaro. and i think i'll store the 84 i have now (its my first car). and later, start up on it again, i even had the idea of doing it as a father/son project for when i have one.

and thanks 94_LT1_Z, i planned on once a month but i'll check more often.

theres a few storage places near me and i'll def ask about the pricing, but do you guys have any ballpark ideas?

Re: facing a tough decision

check with local church leaders, they often know of older widows who own some property but aren't greedy. $1-5 per day usually works.

Re: facing a tough decision

yeah make sure you check on it once a week at the very least my uncle recently had his enire storage unit emptied and the guy running the place said they did it over the period of three days they didnt have enough room in there truck so came back with a trailer but he said they did it in broad daylight so nothing seemed unusual as far as he knew it was just another customer cleaning out there storage... they got my uncles blown 427 hemi tranny the entire interior all custom embroidery basically everything for his 69 charger except the body cause he stripped it himself to ensure everything would go back on right and the way he wanted it basically brought the body shop the shell he got it back freshly painted went to get his parts and his storage was cleaned out.... he pinched pennys and spent all of his spare time and money on that car since i was 4-5 years old im 23 now.. hes been an emotional wreck ever since..
