Re: Distributor question

Not sure if it matters in respect to how it operates, but the old pickup i pulled from my distributor didn't have a coating, but the new one i replaced it with did. Both of them worked, although not really sure how the old one could:

Re: Distributor question

thanks...mine you can see the copper wiring & i was wondering how it could operate like that, thought maybe it was missing.

ive been having alot of issues with shutting off in traffic, idling rough, idling fast on start up & when its at proper running temp. i replaced the tps, o2 sensor, icm - seems to be running better with new icm, new plugs, & fuel filter & also put some injector cleaner in it. time will tell now with all this new stuff replaced. i wanted to make sure i didnt have to replace the pick up coil if i didnt have to.

See this thread for some additional information.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/1...dle-learn.html

It covers the required idle learn procedure, which calibration should be in the ECM, and cleaning the TB. Also check the wires where the coil is. Some vehicles had them routed incorrectly and they chafe through.

The other item is the injectors. If they are still the stock Multec's it is time for new ones. The Multec injector coils start to short out. Gets worse as they heat up. Since the plenum needs to be pulled to measure their resistance, better off just replacing them with a decent set of Bosch injectors.

South Bay (a TGO sponsor) carries the proper replacement injectors.

Theyre black, may be rusty, and are bulky. They look like this https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...injectors.html

Re: Distributor question

thanks for the pic & link....mine look different they look aluminum in color their not black which it sounds like thats a good thing & they dont have that green ring around them.

as for the idle learn procedure we did that the other night but since we installed the double core aluminum radiator & a 180 thermostat the fan isnt kicking on would that have changed the procedure or is it ok that it didnt kick on????

it does seem to be idling better since procedure was done

Re: Distributor question

Unfortunately the picture in the above link isn't a Multec injector. Most likely a Rochester or maybe a Lucas. In the picture below the left injector is a Multec (used). With the right injector being a Bosch (Ford) injector (reconditioned). Picture is from a user on the V6 board that replaced the Multecs with the Bosch.

For the fan, with the lower thermostat the engine may not be getting hot enough. The ECM will kick it on at 226* F. Or when the A/C pressure builds. Disconnecting the A/C high pressure switch and the engine running, the fan should turn on.

You may find that the car doesn't drive/run as well with the 180 thermo. Best is to use the 195 as there are many parameters in the ECM that depend upon it.

Re: Distributor question

. In order for the Camaro to run as it should (with a 180* thermostat), you would need to re-program the PROM chip or get a Hypertech PROM. But they cost around $200. The Hypertech PROM's are already programmed to run at a lowered temperature. So you can get away with a factory PROM and a lower thermostat, but just like RBob said, the Camaro could run bad. Id opt to a new thermostat. Besides, our Camaro can handle high temps. Just make sure that all your hoses are in good condition.
