What the heck is this little box thing???

Hey ppl!!! I have 2 questions I got an 87 TA, fuel injected with a 350...So a friend told my cousin, who has the same car, that this box, or whatever it is, is junk and he's gonna rip it out, but he failed to tell him what it is and what it does, any ideas??? Could I just leave it off or not??

Question #2....I've been reading previos posts about deleting the AIR pump, and this could very well be a silly ? but is everyone just plugging their air check valve or taking it off and pluggin the pipe??

Re: What the heck is this little box thing???

It looks to me like something to do with air pump. I removed mine on 1985 IROC and plugged holes in exhaust manifolds. I have never had a problem since I removed all the air pump stuff.

Re: What the heck is this little box thing???

thats a $300 dollar part haha. you can make some stratch with that on the classifieds board. its called an A.I.R diverter. its required to pass emissions in Cali. Unless you find somebody cool to pass you (usually a run down smog check business) its controlled by the computer and has a two solenoids inside. Basically, when the car starts, the computer routes air from the pump to the headers, and when the O2 sensor hit 600F* and the car goes into closed loop mode, the computer then diverts the air to the Cat. You remember seeing all those tubes and check valves that go in the the Exhaust manifolds right? you should be okay, but may run into problems. I know some people who ripped out the exhaust manifold and ditch the air system. they didnt pass smog/visual. but because it occurs after the combustion process its doesnt affect the performance. BUt by deleting the smog pump, youll actually gain like 5HP. i did that with a AC compresor. better gas milage too. but without emissions it wont pass though. Id put a blower on my ride with fuel injection still but damn **** inspections

The AC compressor draws no power and doesn't effect fuel mileage at all so long as the ac is off. It's connected to the pulley system via an electromechanical clutch.

go to rockauto.com check with kragen.com check with autzone. 300 bucks. it "used" to be 500 dollars in 06'. And dude with/o the ac compressor im getting way better gas milage. i actually cut the belt. witness the results. Kragens listed it for $311.99 ( http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductD...e=1221&PTSet=A )

when something's wrong they don't fix it, they pay someone else to do it. them bashing you was just their way of admitting they had no idea.
