1987 GTA Won't start
I have a 1987 GTA with 56K original miles. Bought it to restore it. Had it up on ramps for 8 months took it down hooked battery up and it fired right up. Three days later went to start it again and it cranks but won't turn over. Checked all fuses on block everything fine there. Checked for spark and have it. When I put the key in and turn it the fuel pump does not come on to prime. I then checked the fuel rail schrader valve and there is no pressure there. Since I have the interior out, right behind where the rear seats would be is a metal kind of block with a pink wire, a light brown wire and a black ground. Hooked a test light up and there is voltage on the pink wire but not on the brown and the the light is dim on the pink wire. Either the fuel pump is shot or not getting enough voltage? Anyone got any "tricks" that may help before I take the tank down? I have already tried beating on the fuel tank a bit but it did not help. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

THe "block" with the pink, brown, and black wires definitely go to the fuel pump.

I located the schematic and it seems the tan and white wire in the above mentioned "block" come from the fuel pump relay. When I probed this wire with the ignition on there was no light. I think it is the fuel pump relay. Going to get a new one and hopefully this will fix it.

Well it was not the relay as I changed it to no avail. The wiires goign to the block I was talking about is in fact not tan and white but rather just tan. Id this wire supposed to have current to it when the ginition is on?

Re: 1987 GTA Won't start
i'm having the same problem. heres what happened to me. i just bought my 87 trans am gta yesterday. and it was half torn apart but i've been driving it. its tpi. when i was going down the road today it just decided to turn off. well with further inspection, we figured the pump wasn't running. first we figured it was a bad pump. but its not. just had a pump put in it a week ago according to my friend. so i looked at the block that the previous poster was talking about and saw that the brown wire had some the insulation off of it and it had ground out on the body. and if that wire is the fuel pump signal wire, it probably goes straight to the ecu. so is it a good possiblility that we have screwed computers? i also checked the pink wire. and it had power.

The block that you are referring to is the fuel pump relay. The brown wire is the supply line which is hot when the key is in the run position. If this wire is grounded or badly corroded you will have no power going to the relay and therefore the fuel pump. You might even try replacing the relay entirely before dropping the tank.
