Cheap / easy cam upgrade for a 305?
I'm doing some research and wanted to get some opinions on a cheap cam upgrade that will work with my stock heads. I heard something about an LT1 cam that would work? That seems a bit much for stock 305 heads.. Anyway I want to build another engine on the side but something to pop in the car right now would be awesome. I'd like a broad range power band. From zero to 90 lol cant have it all but I guess I could just balance it out. Atlanta drives 90mph on average so I have to keep up. I think it was a 300 dollar upgrade due to the roller type.
Facts
> Stock Roller cam
> 2 1\2" Vortec Exhaust upgrade with edelbrock headers
> Ditched computer went with Demon 625 + Accel distributor
> Junkyard aluminum intake manifold, nothing too special, did a port and polish job
> Stock heads, did a port and polish job
> Stock everything else
The Comp Cams 268R seems cool.. but I really want to add more horse than reliability / milege
"268R Roller Cam is the most versatile of all the street roller cams. Excellent throttle response and vacuum makes the 268R an ideal cam for Street Rods, Street Machines and Show Cars with power accessories. The 268R is an excellent all-around cam for the performance minded enthusiast due to its reliability and mileage."
I dont think 9.3:1 is high compression but other than that this 280R cam would have seemed like a good idea.
280R Roller Cam Street/Strip performance or daily usage is possible with the 280R Roller Cam’s broad range of applications. A moderate idle in the higher compression engines makes the 280R a good choice for Street Machines or Street/Strip applications where power and valve train stability are important.

First, those rollers are solid rollers, that's another $500+ in lifters, plus pushrods, plus valvesprings, plus machining your heads to accept that much lift... is that what you want? Your 305 heads don't flow well enough to support that much rpm anyway. For you' the LT1 cam would be ideal. If you try it and are still not happy, then you know you better start building a 350 or larger.

What kind of fuel pump are you using? LT1 cams don't have fuel pump eccentrics. But I do agree, the LT1 cam would be a nice upgrade.

Yeah, I havent dug into how much lift these comp cams have. Was hoping once you pick a series that they would have something for the old stock 305 heads. If the Lt1 cam works fine, that seems simple enough and will hold me over while the 350 project is in progress. I have an electric fuel pump that puts out 7 to 8psi. So the stock L03 head would do fine with the LT1 cam? I'll have to do some numbers to see what I'm really looking at. I'm not looking for an insane increase lol I know that takes more than just a cam, just looking for a bump, maybe it will be the LT1 cam.

if you have stock swirl port heads then your max list cant exceed about .470 after than they start to float. you can modify the heads, but anything with too much lift are going to require some head work.
looks like a fun project.

Even if you run the LT1 cam you're going to need springs. I would also look into getting thinner head gaskets to bump up compression and lower quench distance. And get a better intake, you can find used aftrmarket ones like performers or RPM's for less than $50, it'd be well worth it over a factory intake- unles you have a "z28" intake in which case the next cheap upgrade is a used 350 short block.
