305 Cranks, No Start
I finally got my motor back in my car. I went to start it and it cranks, but won't start. It is getting fuel and spark and I rechecked my timing and its good. Its got me stumped.
What else could make it crank but not start? The ECM is hooked up and is the same one that was in the car when it ran before. The only thing that changed is the PROM chip. Could that cause it to crank but not start? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: 305 Cranks, No Start
I forgot to mention that it is a TPI setup. I also replaced the timing chain, but I am 98% sure I put it on correctly. I tried spraying starting fluid in it and didn't get any response. I also tried checking to see if any codes were set in the ECM. It showed 12, which it should. But I thought it would only blink 12 three times. It kept blinking after 3, until I pulled the jumper out after the seventh time is blinked 12. Is that normal when there are no codes set?

What did you do to the engine when it was out of the car? Rebuild? Also, how is your compression? If rebuilt, spray a little WD-40 in each cylinder through the spark plug hole. Then try. Also, how did you set your rocker arms? Could be too tight and be cracking the valves open just enough to prevent it from starting. I did that when I first started working on cars (about 12 years ago)

Re: 305 Cranks, No Start
The only things I did to the motor when it was out was replace the intake, replace the timing chain, and take out the distributor. Other than that, the motor is exactly the same as when I took it out. I did check to see if it was 180 out. The first time I checked it, it was. I reset it but got the same thing. I am thinking that I may be off on the direction of the rotor. Maybe pointing at 3 instead of 1 while at TDC. I think that would cause it not to even try to start, but I am not sure about that.
