383 heads???

ok im putting together a 383 with flat top pistons that with a 64 cc chamber should give me around a 10:1 compression ratio

i want to spin it around 6000 and im looking at putting a nice set of aluminum heads on it

question is what should i use for heads im not really sure wat to use such as if im goin to need the bigger valves or what sized runners are goin to work best

all inputs are welcome
thnx

Re: 383 heads???

What camshaft are you using? What kind of intake setup? Engine's intended purpose? Those play a major part in deciding what heads are best.

That said - usually heads in the 195cc-210cc range are a very safe bet for a bigger SBC like a 383 or 406, though being on the small side of that is usually better for a primarily street engine. AFR makes a very nice set, as does Trickflow, and Brodix. World and Dart both make a 200cc head as well thats fairly inexpensive by comparison, but they are cast iron (which isn't really a bad thing, I have some 200cc Worlds that I really like).

Valve size doesn't make a big difference with heads like these, as they are already as big as can reasonably fit. 2.02/1.60 is the standard Hi-Perf valve set, so I wouldn't bother with anything bigger if it costs more (some mfg's have optional larger valve sets for some heads, like 2.05/1.60 or 2.08/1.60), they won't improve flow enough to make it worth it.

Re: 383 heads???

well i was tinkin of using a vortec but since the bottom end isnt costin me as much i thought i would spend the extra on a set of aluminum heads

its gunna be a street strip car
i dont rember the exact spec for the cam but its a comp thumper cam rpm range 2000 through 5800 which is right where i want to be spinning it

Forget the Thumper series. Made for noise, not power. The Comp Xtreme Energy series is a much better choice.

Take a look at the Fast Burn heads. Vortec pattern, 200cc intake ports, great out of the box.

Re: 383 heads???

sounds like he already has the cam. It's pretty funny that they make a cam designed to run dirty so it sounds "cool"

Re: 383 heads???

i chose the cam cause i wanted the thumpty thump at idle
my thing is its gunna be more of a street car than a strip car its just gunna be a nasty street car
so it has to be able to have the decent driving conditions i want it for
plus im using a 700r4 so out on the high way im only spinnin around 2000 at 55

Re: 383 heads???

Use the AFR 195cc, Trickflow 195cc, Dart 200cc Iron Eagles, or World Sportsman 200cc. Listed from best to last, but none of them will disappoint.

You'll be a lot closer to 11:1 than 10:1.

Re: 383 heads???

Check out the Brodix IK200s... very reasonable price, very good performance. Dart Iron Eagles are awesome too, and relatively cheap.

Yes. Some headers work better with angled plugs than others. Safest bet is just to get heads with straight plugs though - if they are available with angled plugs, its usually optional - you can have them machined for either straight or angled when you order them.

Re: 383 heads???

The plug angles aren't the same on all heads either.

Re: 383 heads???

Just go with straight plugs - theres no significant enough gain from angled plugs to justify the PITA they can be. The gains from angled plugs isn't much, probably not even noticeable.
