Charcoal Canister hose

I took my '91 TA in a while back to get emissions tested and it failed the visual inspection even though it passed the actual test. It turns out that one of the hoses running off the charcoal canister has been cut off. They told me it had to be run back to the engine block somewhere. However I haven't been able to figure out where it goes.

The hose comes out from the right side of the canister and goes to a T connector. One hose runs down by the passenger fender, the other has a few inches of hose sticking off, connecting to nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the pictures of what I'm talking about:

I'm pretty sure that's the hose that goes to your throttle body on the passenger side. The middle tube that's sticking out.

Re: Charcoal Canister hose

Your charcoal cannister is hooked up correctly. The hose with the T is the air inlet line. It is supposed to be tucked into the fendar area, with one leg up and the other leg down. It may be that the cannister ended up being rotated or the hose was cut short.

Note that on the top of the cannister is molded in wording for the connections. One goes to the tank, one to the TB, and the other is the air vent. The '91s use a otherwise sealed cannistor, no filter on the bottom.

I already traced back the one that goes to the fuel tank as well as another line that goes to the throttle body. So what you're saying is that the T connector is connected properly? Do I need to tuck it in closer to the fender, the other end of the T does indeed go down by the fender. I found the other end of it by crawling under the car.

If everything is hooked up correctly, how do I tell the DMV this? Is there some documentation I can use to sho them that everything is proper?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Charcoal Canister hose

The vacuum line routing decal under the hood will show the DMV that the routing is correct. That is the best document there is.

Otherwise, rotate the cannister so that both ends of the T'd line are under the fender. Or, change the setup as follows:

Find one of the clip on vent caps (stock GM part), remove the entire T'd assembly and put the vent cap over that cannister port.

This vent cap is a little plastic piece and was used on many cars. Can find one in a junkyard by walking down teh GM aisle.

The real issue with the DMV is that the current setup doesn't 'look' correct. Making it look correct is key.
