SES light still on after replacing EGR valve

SES light still on after replacing EGR valve
I work for a chevy dealer in Warrenton, VA. I had our mechanics check my 86 Z28 out after I bought it. The SES light comes on after getting into the accelerator for a little bit and it feels like I am losing a lot of power as well as it feeling like the transmission is surging. They said the EGR valve was bad so I replaced it myself, easy fix right? nope it still has the same problem so it loses power and sucks down gas like there is no tomorrow, what may be the real problem? It has the 4BBL not TPI.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
The SES light is still coming on? What code was/is it setting?
The only EGR fault the ECM detects is the EGR solenoid electrical circuit. Losing power and sucking down gas doesn't sound EGR related, anyway. Something tells me they didn't do a very thorough job of troubleshooting. Can't blame them too much, they probably haven't had any training on this model for 15 years, and probably don't even have the equipment to read trouble codes anymore (unless it's in their personal toolbox).

I don't know what the codes are all I know is that when it happens I hear a small thump like something closing hard. Thanks for the helkp though I'm just going to have all the fuel delivery and emissions controls replaced.

Ok, but that's going to be expensive. I suggest getting a code reader or doing a search to find out which terminals to jumper so the SES light will flash out the code(s) for you.

Replacing things that aren't causing a problem is an expense that will very likely not fix the problem itself. If the SES light is coming on, it's trying to tell you what's wrong - you need to listen. You don't need to buy anything, the FAQ section linked from the thirdgen.org homepage has info on how to pull the codes with a paper clip.

Hey five, just pulled the code, its reading a 53, high voltage at battery or high voltage at EGR, etc. do you have any idea on how to fix it, I have already replaced the EGR valve.

One source that came up on a search said the carb applications code 53 would be a bad connection at the EGR solenoid - I remember my car set a code when I had the EGR solenoid disconnected, but I don't remember which code, and it didn't turn on the SES light if memory serves.
Changing the EGR valve didn't change anything because the EGR valve isn't part of the electrical circuit (and they rarely go bad, in spite of reports to the contrary). Check the EGR solenoid - it may be disconnected, it may have bad wires at the connector or in the harness, or the solenoid could be bad.
The other possibility is the ECM itself is bad (reference voltage).

I'll check the connector at the solenoid, if the connector is bad where can I find a replacement, the local salvage yards around me all say they don't carry anything that old.

yeah the connector was bad, $12 fix no problem, also had to get the carb rebuilt, only one jet was working and flooding at that.
