New MSD dist install. problems inside thread.

Got some problems now... with the distributor install..

This is a pic of the old dist in place :

You can see that the steelwire points to right side of the rotor (seen from above)

And when the new distributor in place it looks like this :

Then it points to the left side of the rotor

The thing is that I cant get any closer with the rotor and I cant turn the distcap conterclockwise because the cables/wires from the ecm that connects to the dist (4pin connector) is TOO SHORT....

Is there enyway of solving this problem ? is there any extend adaptors for the 4pin connector or anything ...?! Dont want to cut it and solder in longer wires, want to keep the stock wiring..

any ideas / tips how to solve this ?

and DONT forget to check out my project thread here : https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/euro...ects-08-a.html

Re: New MSD dist install. problems inside thread.

You can do a couple things to fix it:

Pull the distributor out, and rotate it 1 tooth back. This is kind of a pain, because you need to take a long slotted screwdriver, and turn the oil pump shaft back a little bit also.

OR

Move all of the plug wires 1 over. I think you'd want to move them counter-clockwise, but I could be wrong.

I would definitely try one of those before cutting/extending wires.

Re: New MSD dist install. problems inside thread.

The new distributor is one tooth The Anticlockwise or Counterclockwise
So i need to back it up like 6mm The Anticlockwise or Counterclockwise to get it to the same position.. dont want to move the sparkplug wires..

But ig I move it one tooth clockwise then I get more cable and can adjust both directions ? right ? or am I thinking wrong ?!

Move it over one tooth, line it up, and install your wires. Or do it the old fashioned way, line up TDC on #1 and install distributor.

I do not have any tools for putting it in TDC .. isnt it possible to move it one tooth clockwise and then have someone turn the ignition and in the same time move the distcap back and forth and see if it lights up and then adjust timinig ? or is that a bad idea ?..

you can turn the engine over until you feel air being pushed out of the number 1 spark plug hole. Then turn it the rest of the way until the timing mark on the balancer is lined up with 0 on the timing tab. Thats TDC compression stroke, #1. Install distributor from there. Its foolproof that way. Unless your balancer is faulty.

The only way to turn the engine is with the starter and it isnt that easy to get it right, because its moves pretty fast when Im turning the key...
Is it not possible to get it right in the way im trying, if I only could get a little more wire and it would be fine to move it counterclockwise and then I would be able to set the timing right....

And Im by myself in the garage to it isnt easy to do it by yourself...

My friend dosent have time until the end of the week and I got alot of projects that must be done soon... therefore im feeling a little stressed about this..

This is how I do it when I am by myself:

I use a long 1/2 ratchet with to turn the crank. Position myself on the drivers side with the #1 plug out. Stick finger from one hand in the hole and turn engine with other. Im 6'6" and go 320 though, so I have no problems with this, smaller guys maybe.

Re: New MSD dist install. problems inside thread.

Honestly, I think the best solution would be to grab a flashlight and a long flathead screwdriver, and adjust the oil pump shaft until you can get the dist. to drop back in flush being one tooth back. Jogging the wires one post does work too, but that's kinda cheating, and your wires won't be in the correct position on the cap, which could prove confusing when you work on the car down the road. It'd be silly to go through all the hassle of finding TDC and dropping the dist. in that way, when all you're trying to do is move it one tooth. It usually takes me about 2 or 3 tries of adjusting the oil pump shaft and re-stabbing the dist. before it drops in flush, but with a little patience, it's really not that hard to do. You could also do a little "adjusting" to your wiring harness, such as undoing one of the big metal clamps back there and freeing up the wires some. I can't imagine your wires are so short that you can't "adjust" things enough to get them to extend another inch or two.

Re: New MSD dist install. problems inside thread.

Already removed the metalclamps from the wires.. didnt give me anymore cable.. My friend did the same thing and got some cm extra wire... and for me nothing... Will maybe try to rotate the oilpump again and see if I could get it 1 tooth clockwise and try then... havent been in the garage today, will try this week when my friend can help me ou too..

Thanks again for all the help

Re: New MSD dist install. problems inside thread.

Gotta admit, I'm jealous of the color on your car! My 89 is getting the 91-92, ultra metallic blue whenever I get around to the new paint job. They look awesome in that shade. Looks like you got some nice projects completed over the winter. Nice work on the gauge install, looks professional. I installed one of the old style, large cap HEI, MSD Pro-Billet distributors(#8365) in my 69 Camaro to replace the old stock HEI I had in it for years, and I could tell a difference right off the bat. Guess that fancy looking, digital module really does work better. Besides, that billet aluminum housing looks so much sexier than the cast aluminum stockers!
