I have a 92 305TPI and came across a set of cat power engine products roller rockers... http://www.catpep.com/catproducts/pr...E-350A1.5G.asp My question is this... The specs on these say they are 1.5 self-aligning, 3/8 stud and will fit 55-87. If they will fit an 87 shouldn't they also fit my 92???

Being self-aligning, they should be for '88-up. Or, '55-'87 if you open up the pushrod holes.

hey five, i've been looking into getting rockers for a new set of heads im tryin to pick up. there the 081's so its the post 87 style heads and are roller so i was under the influence that i could ONLY buy self aligning rockers for it. NOW, you said if you open up the pushrod holes? im confuzed

Speaking of C.A.T rockers, I came across these C.A.T. full roller rockers. Is anyone familiar with these? Look like a Comp Pro magnum clone, could be questionable quality. Good price for full rollers available in both self-aligning and non-self aligning, and various ratios however:

The heads aren't roller. The block/lifters are what make an engine "roller" from the factory standpoint.

'87-earlier, the rocker arms were aligned either by the pushrod holes (slots, more than rounded), or guideplates with aluminum heads. '88-later, the pushrod holes in the heads were larger and round, and the rockers were "self" aligning on the valve stem. So, if you take '87-earlier heads and drill out the pushrod holes, you can use self-aligning rockers.

The CAT rockers are beyond just "questionable" on quality.
They're junk.
I had a set in my hands once. Even though I know of people having issues with them, I was going to install a set of their 1.65 ratio SA full rollers as an experiment. But after seeing them close up, I decided that putting them in for even just a few test runs was too much risk.

86LG4Bird, the 1.65's caught my eye also. I saw these months ago. I know they're "Made-In-China", which sends up a flag for openers. Then again, much of todays aftermarket auto parts are sadly made off shore. Many times this indicates inferior product. What about the C.A.T.'s would you say was 'junk' in particular: appearance, machining, etc?

Comp does make a 1.65 in their Hi-Tech Stainless line. Much higher co$t no doubt. 1.6 Pro Magnums are full roller and probably a better bang-for-the-buck. Probably be worth it for "peace of mind".

First, the slop in the SA washers and roller tip was excessive in my opinion, much worse than the Comps and Cranes I've seen. These looked brand new (no visible wear indications) but actually had 2000 miles on them on a properly setup valvetrain running a stock LT1 B-car cam (extremely mild application). Regardless, whether the slop was present from new or not, it indicates a problem. Not surprisingly, both failures I know of personally involved the roller tip completely coming out of the rocker body.
Secondly, even though the rockers were marked 1.65, they were clearly not.
I installed one on my motor and noticed the same pushrod clearance as with the Crane full roller 1.6's. Naturally, I was expecting less. Dimensional inspection showed virtually identical cup-fulcrum-tip dimensions as my Crane 1.6's.

Thanks 86LG4Bird. Even if the quality was top notch, the fact that the ratio is wrong suggests plenty. One or more tips coming off would be catstrophic, certainly not worth the saving over the Comps.
