Horsepower on my 383...seems a bit low?

Hi Guys,
I just finally wrapped up with my 383 project. I took her to the dyno the other day, and she put out 310hp and 383ft/lb torque to the rear tires.
I just want to know if this is about right for my combination? I live in California so the engine is all smog legal. Here are the specs.

ZZ383 Engine from GM
Superam Intake
30lb injectors
1.6 rockers
219/219 cam
Headers
Custom prom.

The dyno guy said that the engine can make way more hp if I went with a more agressive cam, but that it would probably not pass smog.
Anyway, give me your thoughts about this issue. Just kinda worried that the car is not making as much HP as it should.
Thanks,
Tommy

What kinda dyno was it...Mustang or Dynojet? Mustangs read lower. Your making good power, esp. on the torque. What's the compression ratio and is from a dyno tune or just a chip you had burned for your engine?

Re: Horsepower on my 383...seems a bit low?

That Lingenfelter 219/219 camshaft was great in its day, but that was 15+ years ago. Its ancient and outdated now. Even an LT4 HOT cam would be better, as that's only ten years old. The hot setup now is the Comp Cams XFI series, specifically the XFI268 and XFI280 series. If you can custom tune the chip, you can make it pass smog.
Secondly, did you port-match the TPI intake at all? Stock out of the box, its horrible. There are many areas you can port to open it up and make it flow more, even with a SuperRam.
We have SoCal guys making anywhere from 310-350 RWHP and 370-410 RWTQ with 350's, passing CA smog better than stock, and getting 20+ miles per gallon, all on chips tuned by myself. Sounds like you need to redo your combo. Sorry to give you bad news.

Kevin,
Thanks for the suggestion! What kind of HP numbers could I see using the XFI268 or XFI280? I had the chip burned by "Fast Chips". Would you be able to tune a chip for me for my combo?
Thanks,
Tommy

Re: Horsepower on my 383...seems a bit low?

No idea what kind of power you would see with a different camshaft. Allen (1989TransAmGTA) got 350 RWHP and 380 RWTQ with a 355, an automatic, a XFI268 camshaft, and Dart 200 cylinder heads. Other people have posted their dynos with XFI268 cams so you'll have to search and see.

Sure I can tune your car, if you bring it down to me in SoCal. (or pay my way up there to you.)

There is more power to be had with a custom tuned chip in person or DIY than a mail order.

Remember, dynos is just a tuning tool. Take it to the track and really see what it will do.

Re: Horsepower on my 383...seems a bit low?

assuming you're on stock heads, that camshaft is a MAJOR restriction.

The heads that come on that ZZ383 (iirc) are a bit shallow on the exhaust side, so your first mistake was using a single pattern cam. You need one with a lot more duration on the exhaust side. That, and it's just too small to begin with, especially in a 383.

I'd recommend something more like the 292XFI. Look for something around 23x/24x @.50, with whatever lift those heads can handle.

Or if you'd like to spend $50 more and get way better drivability with alot more power, check out Cam Motion or Camshaft Innovations for custom camshafts. There is no substitute for a custom ground to your application.
