Re: MORE POWER what i need to get it???

Here's a start:

The Lingenfelter Power Formula

* Always maximize power within the rpm band where the engine spends its most time

* Vehicle application is far more important than most enthusiasts would believe

* Bigger is rarely better. "Small" intake ports, manifolds and exhaust systems maximize torque which improves that wonderful "seat-of-the-pants" feeling in street engines

* Port velocity will improve cylinder filling more efficiently, especially at and below peak torque, than big flow numbers generated by large, slow moving ports

* A strong cylinder head will always make more power even if poorly matched with the cam. A weak cylinder head matched with an optimized cam will never perform as well.

* Transmission & rear end rear ratios have a significant impact on engine component decisions. A good example of this is camshaft selection charts that emphasize cruising rpm - basing, in part, a cam profile on gear ratios.
To put it bluntly, you've got a bit of studying ahead of you. Try searching this forum for things like "basics", "what mods should I do first", etc.

Good luck.

Re: MORE POWER what i need to get it???

Carb and intake won't give you much HP/$ right now.
The heads DESPERATELY need to be replaced. Jump up the CR and get better flow. That cam can go next, but it's ok for now, until the heads go.

Re: MORE POWER what i need to get it???

ok, well with a 5 speed you can go a bit more aggressive. What are the rear gears? 3.53 sounds oddball?

Vortec heads and intake would work ok.
Any aftermarket head in the 180cc intake port range would work nice. Probably 64cc heads, that'd put you nicely into the 9ish:1 range of compression. Iron or AL would work ok.

222/222 is an alright cam, it just has kinda lazy ramps on the cam, not much lift. I'm not sure how much difference it would make to go to a split pattern cam with more lift, like a Compxe268h or something. Like i'm not sure if it would be worth the $200.

Re: MORE POWER what i need to get it???

You don't have to tear the rear apart to figure out what gear it has. Just mark the tires with the car on jacks or a lift and count how many revs of the driveshaft it takes to make one complete revolution of the tires.

Re: MORE POWER what i need to get it???

I actually have the same motor, but a few things currently done to it; like Heddmann headersand y- pipe, RPM Air Gap Manifold,Holley 650 carb, high flow Summit water pump...but more fun is what is on my bench in the shop . A set of Patriot Freedom series heads, and all the upgraded components to go with it from Comp like 1.6 roller tipped rockers, double roller timing chain and of course the new cam. BUT The sales guy at Comp actually sold me a "smaller" cam than what is currently in my motor ! I bought the 268H , but am looking at the 268 XE OR their Thumper. I need input from anyone running a setup w/ the heads I have ! Can I run the Thumper without piston-to-valve problems ?!
