Cutting out at 2500 rpm ???

Okay, some dimwit that I got my camaro from put in an old points style distributor and coil on the 350....and it idles like a champ! purrs like a kitten, but I can't get above 2500 rpm without it coughing and sputtering...back under 2500 and it's smooth sailing....the kid thought it was the holley carb he had on it, but I have a good carb on it that I had on my bashed up T/A...so I know it's not the carb. Any ideas? Could the coil be a very low voltage and just stop working at 2500 rpm? Engine is from a 93 C1500....no smog, no electronics hooked up to the engine whatsoever...just old school motoring

Pull the points distributor out of there asap.. it has no room in any car.. go buy a stock hei replacement or a performance piece if you want.. chances are the thing isn't installed correctly or set up right at all...

You'll probably have to change your wires 2 when switching from the points style dist. to the HEI.

I had points on an older chevy inline engine and I thought I had it running like a top w/ new wires, plugs, cap, points, etc. I was constantly tweaking and tuning trying to get more from it- Then I read somewhere that the newer inline engines from the 80's used a HEI dist. and it would drop right in place so the next time I was at the Jyard I picked one up for 15bux. I didn't do anything to the HEI except scrape the contacts inside the cap, dropped it in w/o setting the timing and just amazing what a difference it made BEFORE adjusting it. On another engine I switched from TBI to carb and needed a dist. so I sought out the nastiest looking HEI from the local J-yard, I didn't even pull the cap on that one to look at it, dropped it in and vroom- got 20,ooo miles and still going on that one..
