Gas tank! Smell,evap.

Hi,

I have a 92 gas smelly vert. I've had this problem since I bought it. I replaced the filter twice (Once becuase I had the FRAM which had a re-call on it). I get this smell of gas under driver side fender. I am immidatelly thinking the re-call. however, after calling 5 dealerships they all said, by looking at my vin, there is no re-call.
So, i put my brain to use.

When I open the gas cap there is always hissing, and preassure is released. That leads me to think that there is no leak at the tank. If there was, shouldn't there be little to no preassure in the tank??

I also thought of the UFO looking vent thats located very close to the "smell". When it gets hot, in the summer, and when i shut off the car I can hear a hiss coming from that direction that vents out. It makes a "whoooshhhhhhh" sound and I am hit with a decently strong smell of gas. Than its gone.

Thirdly, when its really hot, my pump starts whining. I can hear "whooooo" from the back of the car. Usually, it goes on and off, not too frequent.

This all intensified after I installed edelbrock exhaust and muffler. I've heard things about it being to hot and the fuel getting hot. Is this true??

I bought a vented gas cap as well, and I went stuff out, but it seems to help very little unless its open all the way.

Looking at the gas tank, there is no visible evidence of a leak, standing even or on inclines or declines. Nothing on the ground as well.

I need some suggestions.

What is this? There's a pressure relief valve on the driver's side over the rear axle, is that what your describing?

The boiling temperature for gasoline is 100-400°F do you think it's getting that hot near the tank? Could very well be increasing the tank pressure as it heats up. Running rich?
Is your passenger side floor board getting hot? If so it's the Cat that causing the heat.
Might look into how the charcoal canister works.

I really looked into this problem. I've had a problem passing emissions because I ran rich. The true problem were three injectors...
I took it to a shop because I was at my wits end of what could be wrong...

They said that my tank was not venting properly. Apparently my canister was soaked with fuel. I got another one, and one of the shop guys told me to unplugg that line and have it vent to the outside. So I put a breather on it and palced it safely close to the fender. I can hear that line gargeling when the car warms up.
Also, the UFO (pressure relief valve) does vent the fumes out. I am almost 100% certain on that. I am not sure why it would send fumes out, but from the name of it, sounds like thats what it does.

I am thinking that the relief valve might be faulty, but I am also not ruling out a pinhole leak on my "shitty soldered" fillerneck.
I have to drop the tank to find out.
Still, there are NO apparent leaks, just fumes!

That's a no-no, fuel fumes are far easier to ignite than liquid fuel. The vapors stored in the canister are pulled into the engine by vacuum under certain condition, this increases the gas mileage.

The PRV is relieving excess vapor pressure which the charcoal canister is apparently not able to handle. If it is venting then you need to find out why the tank is producing too much vapor pressure.

There are no liquid leaks, this only means that it'sw a vapor leak, if there is one, (reason for the smell) it's above the liquid level.

I am quite aware of that.

Whats in the gas tank that could build up pressure?? Possibly a plugged line. However, everything flows and runs fine, I checked the lines.

I am really thinking that, either my relief valve is fubar, or there is that re-call problem that I shouldn't have! (fillerneck).

THe line that comes from the tank to the canister has a rubber hose part right where the relief valve is. It seems like that hose is in not so good a shape. I will try to replace it and get hose clamps on it, instead of those crimp clamps (whatever you call them).

Ok so let's see what happens after you replace the UFO (yea, it does look like one.)

Did the shop actual test the evaporative emission control system, or did they just replace the canister?

I know I'm asking alot of questions, but the problem remains and there must be an answer. That intank PRV recall is really old, why didn't it get done to your car?

I can't tell you. This was in a shop that "Tried" to run me a serious bill. So I take everything they said to me with a grain of salt.

I don't know why the re-call hasn't been done!

Thanks for helping me out. I'll get the UFO thing in a week or so. Right now, there is virtually no smell, and I am thinking that Fram filter was just crap. They had a re-call on Fram filters because they were threaded wrong and it would unscrew itself little by litte enough to let the fuel drip out of there. Enough to smell it, thats for sure.

Re: Gas tank! Smell,evap.

So did you get the "Ufo" and did it help?
I'm working on a similar problem and I'm not sure if I should replace this part or the charcoal canister.
Thanks
