if the 305 heads have not been ported then the vortecs are better, if they are ported then the vortecs MIGHT be better, it depends on how well they were done. you will need a new manifold with the vortecs.

I would vote for the vortecs. I picked up a set plus an edelbrock manifold to match for $300, with less than 100 miles on them. They are cheap, but its probably the best bang for your buck you can get. Check out some of Chevy Hi-Performance articles, they have done a few buildups with the Vortecs and have achieved some pretty decent numbers. Do you have a casting number off the 305 heads, or know what they came off of originally? Also what size cam are you running? If you know what your cam specs are, you can really narrow down your head selection and what your motor's wanting.

All I did on mine was port and polish out the exhaust a little (future nitrous plans), and other than low lift capabilities (easily fixed at the machine shop), they some pretty damn good heads.

Vortecs are better. Well worth the $$$, even with the requirement of a new vortec manifold. Nobody that has ever swapped to a set from a stock head is ever going to say they are dissapointed.

Your 305 heads have tons of power potential at much less cost *if you're wiling to put the time and effort into them*.
They will need full porting and larger valves. You'll need to do much more than play around with a die grinder a bit.

I'm on my third set of vortecs and ported about 10 sets of 305 heads (416 casting). have flow tested both and had both on the same short block 350. About 1/2 the overall cost, easy 12sec street power.

Currently working on a set of Dart Iron Eagle 180's.
I'm haveing to do all the porting work to these heads to get them ready, that I do to the 305 heads.
Which 305 castings do you have?
