imo there are alot better things to spend money on than heads for a stock motor. Do you even have headers?

Start with a full exhaust, followed by gears and a stall. Then start thinking about heads/cam.

from what Ive read its hard to beat gm vortec heads. Plus there pretty cheap to buy.

Forget about GM vortec heads. Get the topline vortec heads they cost about equal to stock when you get all the machine work done to the stock ones. They have improved water passages and thicker decks and are better suited if you ever decide for some kind of forced induction.

Your motor is not ready for that yet. If anything it will cause problems. Check out the TPI board and or use the seach function for more info in regards to this.

What are your power goals? You can port the stock heads and you can support a solid 400+ hp with them. To me there is no point in swapping them. Especially if you have the stock TPI system (ported or not). I would look at a cam swap and chip work. I would even go as far to say that chip work should be first on your list.
