What's an "acceptable" knock count?
On a stock 305 TBI, I set the timing to 7º BTDC (running 93 octane). Then drove 22 miles to work. I could only hear knock on light acceleration (non PE) right after the gear change. Scanned and got a knock count of 113 (about 40 minutes of driving).
So the next day, I drop it to 4º BTDC, and drive to work. Can't hear anything at all, and the knock count dropped to 61.
Right now it's set to 3º BTDC, and the knock count's 13 after a quick sprint down the highway and back, but I have a lot less power (0-60 in 8.3 instead of my usual 7.7).
Ooh, I'm gonna go try something.
Anyway, like the subject says...

I just went and banged on the pass. side exhaust manifold and watched the knock counts. I'd have to hit it pretty hard (I'd say hard enough to dent a piece of thin sheetmetal) to get a count to register. Think that's sensitive, or no? I may just go ahead and replace the sensor (it *IS* 160k miles old) then advance the timing back to 4º BTDC.

Zero is acceptable. Stock timing for you engine combo is "0". Some engnes will take more, some won't due to various issues (milage, carbon, vacuum leaks, etc).

what if I wanted to disable the knock sensor to run a huge cam??? how do I do that?? Would it work? If not, Why, and how would i make it work? I've got a stock 305 with catback exaust and i wana run a nice lumpy cam but Cant with all the Knock Retardations and O2 sensors and Vaccume Crap this and that. I dont care about the horsepower the cam makes, I just like the sound! I will add Headers later as well, I beleive it is critical to sound ALOT and breaks up the exaust gasses instead of stock manifolds mashing them together.

Jza...what kind of sound are you hearing? You said it was right after shifts well i have mine set at 4* BTDC and everytime it shifts it sounds like when you are in a manual and u are in to high of gear trying to go up a hill...ya know what i mean? The sound you are gettin is like that? I believe my car made that sound a little bit when i had it a 0*..so should we just ignore it or set the timing back to factory specs..Let me know.
