Removing park lock cable from steering column?
Hello all,
I'm in the process of removing my steering column and have it laying on the floor of the car...my only problem is, I can't figure out how to remove the park lock cable from the steering column. This is the cable that runs from the column to the shifter. I've seen some diagrams posted on different forums, and instructions saying to turn the ignition lock cylinder to the 'RUN' position and use a screwdriver in the appropriate slot to disengage the cable. Where is this mysterious slot?!? I've been looking and prodding at things, and I'm stumped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
RestoRoc89

Nevermind, I got it...there's a little slot with a plastic tab inside...sure enough...stick in a screw driver and out if comes...You have to appreciate how everything always takes five hours longer than it should the first time.

Re: Removing park lock cable from steering column?
I had a hard time figuring out what to press to release this cable from the ignition switch and none of the other posts showed photos. So here's one I took that might help the next person trying to get this out of the ignition switch. Some posts said the ignition switch had to be in Run. I don't remember that mattering on mine, but it is something to be aware of. I kind of slid the pocket screwdriver down between the black plastic tab and the metal tab, so it forces the plastic tab down then rock the screwdriver to push the cable out.
Here's a couple of pics of the switch and the cable separated

Great addition, Lurbie! My ‘89 Iroc succumbed to rust problems years ago, but I actually picked up a mint, low mileage ‘87 this past fall and have just started actively participating in the forums again.

Swapping my auto for a 6 speed stick. I was trying to figure out how to lose that cable. Good info, thanks for posting.
