My 88 IROC has a oil leak from the drain plug and I just got the car and just had the oil changed at the local dealership and noticed a oil leak just recently. I know the previous owner put a over sized drain plug in it because the dealership told me about it. And I have not checked it yet to see if its just loose but since I dont get much time to check this board during the week I figured I should ask now and hope to get a response before I do anything to drastic. But my question is can I put another oversized drain plug in it to get me by for another 2 or 3 years because thats when I plan to some major changes under the hood?? I am a body man by trade and dont have all the tools I need to pull the pan and put a new oil pan in it properly. So i guess if I have to put a new oil pan in it then Ill have to break down and bother a friend to help me with it. But I dont really want to do that. Advice please!

mine also leaks i was thinking about putting some thread locker or rtv or maybe even some of that white tape that pipe fitters use on the treads of pipes before fitting them. are any of these a good option or should i just get an oversized plug too?

Replacement drain plugs sometimes have gaskets on them that crack or get a bit deformed if they are overtorqued. Just about every time I change the oil in my '79 T/A, I have to replace the drain plug gasket or replace the drain plug on the 7 quart Moroso pan because the nylon gasket takes a set and won't seal again properly. Just try a new gasket first and don't overtorque it.

oohhh maaan, overtorque it lol my plug doesnt get tight it just keeps spinning, that cant be a good thing, i dont even know how it really stays in there lmao!! do you think a new plug will still work? with a gasket on it.

that is what I would do if I were you badseed. I think ill crawl under the car tomorrow and see if the nylon washer is even on there. Im sure it is but ill check anyway. If it is still on there I wonder if doubling them up would work??

You can buy replacement drain plug gaskets at the auto parts store for cheap. Once one takes a set it is liable to leak unless you get it back on in exactly the same position...at least in my case.

I have used a cut piece of leather and found it to be the best gasket come washer ever. Never leaked again as long as I had the car .... two more years
