Reman Engine & 083 heads

These heads are the stock L98 heads, right? Will they work with the stock TPI base?

I ask because I am ordering a stock rebuilt longblock next week and the specs on the engine are that it is 87-90 with a roller cam and 083 heads....but on a different website, it shows that the 083 heads are a 55-86 intake pattern, not the 87+. BTW...I want the 083 heads to make sure that the rebuilder doesn't swap on 350 TBI heads...what are the other cast iron L98 head #'s so I can place the order with particular head/block #'s.

Anyone answer this one?

Thanks,

Adam

083 is in fact the L98 heads. There is no other cast-iron one.

I think you mis-read, or read extra into, the information available. Mortec doesn't say that the heads have any 55-86 bolt pattern; what it does say, is "crate motor for years indicated". Which means, if you went to the dealer and ordered any of certain crate motors designed to drop into a 55-86 car, it would have those heads on it.

187 is the most common TBI 350 head to avoid.

RB, IIRC "187" is the 305 TBI. "193" was the 350 TBI.

Unless you are referring to putting 305 heads on a 350, in that case, yes, 187 is the head to avoid.

Heads with casting #083 came on L98's equipped with Iron heads (all 350TPI F-bodies).

193 is the swirl port head found on TBI 350's. And the 193's suck. I know that much for sure.

Also check out what camshaft they are installing into that reman. I thought I was getting a L98 enigne because the company listed it under the *8" digit for VIN decoding.

Turns out they sent me a reman 350 with 193 heads and a tiny *** camshaft.

190/194 duration @ .050"
.384"/.400" lift with 1.5 rockers
116LSA.

How crappy can you get. I knew there was something wrong the minute my car couldn't break 87mph at the drag strip in the 1/4 mile.

15.3 @ 87mph with no traction problems on launch. All I did was drop the hammer when it went green.

But I've got parts to fix this RIGHT now. ^_^ Just waiting for the opportune moment to put he car down and do the swap.

That is incorrect. 083 heads were only supplied on 350s after 1986.

The reman place is Marshall engines...warranty is 3 year/100K miles...even if I install it

You can get the cam profile numbers though.

They HAVE to know whats going in it. Do yourself a favor and push until they give up the numbers. After I realised something was wrong with my car it took me about two weeks of talking with people to finally get someone to tell me the #'s on the cam profile. Then I got the supervisor and made a formal complaint that they were advertising that piece of crap 350 as a L98 replacement with the same performance.

Sounds like good advice to me...I will follow up and post results before I order the engine.

Thanks,
