LT-1 block interchange with L-98?

Car: '88 GTA, 90 Formula
Engine: 5.7 TPI, fed growth hormones
Transmission: 700r4 4u2?
Axle/Gears: 9bolt
LT-1 block interchange with L-98?

Hi guys,
I remembered that the LT-1 and L-98 share a lot of parts, and I was wondering if an LT-1 block could be used as the basis for a TPI motor build-up. There are some iron-head LT-1 taxis in the boneyard near me.

Nope. Reverse flow cooling and the weird provisions for the LT-1 Optispark distributor on the front of the motor will be the major obstacles that prevent you from using it.

If you get the motor, why not just leave it as a regular LT1 motor. Maybe just upgrade the iron heads to get alum heads.

Thanks for the response.

I would prefer to keep the outward appearance of a TPI engine in the car. Swapping to an LT-1 here in California will require you to go through a special smog certification every 2 years, with a referee looking for any small reason to fail your car.

Anything that is too different can cause problems, and they seem to change the smog laws here every few years. If anyone has this swap here in the greater LA area, I would love more info on this.

if you swap in a stock lt1 it should pass smog pretty damn good.

Yeah, I believe its legal to swap to a newer motor, if it was offered in that car. An LT1 is not a L98 but its still a 350, so you might get away with it easily.

It is a legal swap. But as TA said, in Ca. it's different. You have to be clever to make your car appear stock, or you're asking for more problems.
I don't think it's legal to swap on an LT1 intake either.
