check engine light
hi guys, i'm thinking about getting one of those K&N cone filters that connects directly to the throttle body, but i know when i disconnect the hose from the TB to the MAF the check engine light comes on because the computer thinks that there isnt any air coming into the engine. My question is is there anything i can do to keep the engine light from coming on?

I would say take the MAF sensor out, and then reroute it into a fender wall or something like that so it gets colder air to it. That way, you won't trip any trouble codes and you'll probably get a little more performance out of it, since it'll trick the car into thinking that its getting denser air.
good luck,

just convert it over to speed density and all your problems will go away....
i'd buy one of those air filters, but I like the way the factory air box looks..

GTA,
OR you can install a K&N replacement filter in the existing "garbage can" air cleaner, P/N E-0890. In order to make the most of the free-flowing filter, you might want to modify the "garbage can": Air Flow.pdf
You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view/print the file.
Never mind - I saw the '86 305TPI in your sig, and didn't realize you were talking an '88. In any case, you can still use a K&N replacement and trim the interior baffles to increase flow potential.

Take the screens off the maf and get the KN filter for the garbage can. Filters right off the tb sucks nothing but hot air and getting rid off the MAF is a mistake.

I agree in using a K&N replacement filter. However, you should cut the sides out of your canister. This basically converts it to an open element air cleaner. I just left a couple of strips about 1" wide on each side (3 of them) so their was enough strength for the canister to not collapse on the filter.
Also, if you box the air filter canister (or garbage can as Vader likes to call it) so the air is drawn from the passenger filter, it will also get colder air into the intake. I also made sure that hot air from the radiator could not get into the air filter assembly by making a "wall" between the radiator and the air filter. The only place the air can come from then is the inner fender (and colder air).

The '85 and '86 TPIs have a cylindrical air cleaner assembly with a square plastic lid. The air in these cleaners flows from the inside of the filter element outward. They are not very free-flowing in stock configuration, so due to that and their appearance, I have lovingly dubbed them "garbage can". I've got a way around the restrictions, so I guess mine is now only a "minnow bucket". (??)
