Cylinder Head Selection/Mods

Spring has sprung. The snow is melting. Tax checks are flying. Many people have the urge to get out and release that pent-up energy from a long gray season. The smell of rubber will soon fill the air.

Along with that, there seem to be a lot of questions regarding cylinder head modifications and replacements recently. Before posting a thread simply asking "What heads should I get?", it may be beneficial to review some general data on heads.

Keeping in mind that peak horsepower is generally equated to peak head flows, and improved lower RPM torque is generally equated with higher intake port velocity. Once you decide what you want your engine to do the most of, start searching the data. You could perform extensive searches on the archives of this site, but a quick-and-dirty way to possibly narrow down the choices can be found at the Chevy High Performance web site.

This excellent article and all its linked pages should be of great value to those "head-hunters" among us:

416's!!

Heh, just wanted to get that out of the way, as I'm sure there'll be a lot of discussion about 305 heads with potential.

All I wanna know is what heads would get me low/mid 13s with a 2 bolt 355, stock crank and rods, SpeedPro 345NP (I think that's the model) pistons, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and 1406 carb, stock height tires, and stock 2.77:1 rear gears. Right now I'm running 416 casting heads from an 83 TA that was originally CFI.

Car: Junk
Engine: Junk with nitrous
Transmission: Junk with gears
I'm pretty sure with stock gears NO heads will get you low 13's unless you hit it with nitrous or a power adder

I do wanna get 3.42s. I'd go for 3.73s, but I am slightly fuel conscious. $10 an hour doesn't make for a lot of spare gas money. LOL

Now, what EVER whould give you that idea.

GilmoreD : Your present 305 heads have lots of "potential"

A home porting project with new larger valves is just the ticket for someone looking for an improved cylinder head on a budget.

You already have a pair too. You're half way there.
