HITHERE HITHERE Factory SBC Design Question...

I have been digging around on my '96 SS looking for the oil temperature sensor. I noticed brass plugs (unpainted, no less). I'm almost positive I knocked out steel plugs from the '94 when it was out, or so I recall. The '96 has a whopping 4,175 miles on it, so I know they were factory. Seven oil changes may have eaten up the sensor, eh?
I'm in even darker ages...
What's baffling is that although the dealers have a P/N and inventory for the sensor, no one can tell me where it is mounted. The Bell & Howell slides and screens don't show it in the exploded diagrams. I'm getting a P0197 DTC. When I changed oil yesterday, I removed the level sensor in the side of the pan, and that isn't even CLOSE to the temp sensor. The plug is totally different, wrong threads, etc.
BTW - HITHER
