I too thought of a idea daydreaming during class of a DOHC type setup, but the cam was also the valve. I believe it's called a rotary/spherical type valve. Here's a link to a company that seems to be well on their way to that idea. Coates spherical valve

how can you do that by spinning the oil pump? and thats not the main concern... its the bearings... they scrape and complain when you start then engine with no oil!

Well if the crank has to turn the crank has to turn, I may have to incorporate a 2-stage starter. One 'slow' stage forpre-oiling, then a second stage for starting the car.

All of these idea's are great. I personally would like to see some sort of electrochromatic, where as you can have the windows tinted to any extent and when you get pulled over you can quickly change it to 100% clear looking again.
I am currently working on a eletric front liscense plate, where it rotates under our front ground F/X and then rotates back up front of car, another handy thing for the cop (no front liscense plate law). Could you imagine driving around with it tucked up under the car and get pulled over and the officer says, "The reason I pulled you over is because you don't have your front plate on" you say, "officer, it was on their last time I checked", (obviously you hit the switch as he is pulling you over) and you go out there with the cop and show him its there, he'd think he was going crazy. I HIGHLY doubt he would suspect anything. maybe if you got pulled over 2 or 3 times by the same cop for the same thing, then he might get suspicious and check it out. It would also come in handy in car shows. same with the window tint thing

i know you're project is already set, but i just wanted to throw out another idea - liquid cooling the electric gas pump. as it stands, the only thing that really cools them now is gas. and when you're low, they run hotter, and if you starve the tank, they burn out faster because they're already fairly hot. so actively cooling them would not only extend their life in general, it might save them when they're pushing their limits.

yeah, but that's true of a lot of systems. it's the same argument as water cooling an engine, as in "if your coolant leaks inside the engine you've got a problem". and cooling things is no big deal, it's been done before, but the sealing and the compatibility / non-catastrophic failure is where the engineering challenge is. for instance, you could go with a water-only system, so that you're minimizing the damage since some water getting into gas won't necessarily cause an engine failure, and while it's a problem, it's not too serious. or it would take some significant work designing parts that would basically outlive the fuel pump, so that you wouldn't have to take apart the whole system for a cooling failure, it would just become a 'routine' item when you change fuel pumps. (like an oil filter is to an oil change. you can cheap out and skip it once in a while, but you're not doing yourself any favors...)

Sitting Bull, it would be kind of interesting, alot of combines apply that idea using hydrostats, Fendt has a tractor that allows highway speeds of 45mph using a hydrostat....i mean, it's not DESIGNED for speed only, but that shows the plausibility of it, i think it'd be bad ***...but i have little to no idea how hydrostats work...i'm fairly sure hydrostat is just john deere's name for their hydraulic drive...i think the only downside is that it requires alot of torque to run a hydraulic drive...

Actually, depending on the pump, input torque doesn't have to be very high at all. It's all in the final drive ratio, plus losses.

An engine with a short runner intake, good heads that had a small intake port for torque, based on a Motown SBC block with a lightweight 400+ ci. rotating assembly, and variable-ratio rocker arms. Hell, I heard they got 'em now on the new Volvo's. Imagine 500RWHP out of a car that idles like stock, N/A. Well maybe not that much, but it would be nice...changing progresively, automatically, through the powerband.
How about using a device similar to a camshaft as a reluctor ring, use the signals to send the PCM data, and relate those signals to valves actuated by a spring-loaded electric motor to open and close the valves? Based on the SBC design? Think about it...from stock to race with simple reprogramming...and it all uses existing technology. Only problem is finding a motor strong enough to overcome the spring, and be durable enough to last a long time, and cheap enough to not cost mega-$$$. Maybe magnets or pressurized oil?

I'd like to see a client/server implementation done with the computer, so instead of needing a special computer and cable and proram, all you need is a laptop with IE, and a USB connection. The car's computer sends you an html page, listing the error codes, or, lets you view real-time engine running data through an OLE DB link. This way you could leave your computer hooked up for hours or days or weeks, and perform data mining; looking for trends. Of course, there could be a VC++ front-end which allows you to see the real-time data as it's fed into your DBMS.
I'm spending too much time at work lately.
On a non-tech swing, I'd like to see a glove compartment (or console) that was heated, so in the winter, when I grab my driving gloves, they're already warmed up. A heated steering wheel would be nice, too.

i saw a "pre-oiler" in Hot Rod many years ago, i wanna say it was called pre-lube or sumfin close. you turn on your ignition, the pump starts and when your oil pressure light goes out, it's safe to start the car, once the car is started, the pump shuts off.

Add to that a professor who doesn't know automotive engine use an engine-driven oil pump to lubricate the internal moving parts, and you've got a receipe for disappointment.

ON the window tint. My iroc has a notch back on it with a flat window.. I saw on the DIY or another home show. Where thay where doing a bath room. There are new windows that you can get at the flip of a swich thay go from clear to frost. I dont know how it works but would be nice to get a hold of it and cut it to fit the back.

What is a Mayback 57 & 62??????? I just want a flat pice to cut to fit the notch back on my iroc z28. My dad is a truck driver for gardian glass and he thinks thay make it. He's going to look in to it for me..
