Oil pressure jumping around- why?

OK people. Today, I was driving in to work and I noticed the oil pressure gage jumping around some. The throttle was steady and I was driving on level ground. Why would it do this?

By the way, I have 92 Z28 with the 350 TPI. Thanks in advance...

The Josh

Probably needs a sending unit. They go bad alot. When one of htese cars says it has funky oil pressure, that's the first thing you should do.

Is there any way of testing it? I realize they're not that expensive....just curious.

Yes, the one near the distributor is for the fuel pump shutoff. I think.

At the oil filter?? What year/engine is that? The 83Z I gave my son (305HO) had the oil pressure sending unit located kind of behind the distributor on the drivers side and was a pain to get to when we replaced it. I'm driving an 86 IROC (305 TPI) and need to change my sending unit out. Is it located down by the oil filter on that year/engine?

The carbed cars all have it behind the dist; FI cars need an additional oil pressure sensor to turn the pump off when the engine is not running, for safety reasons. On some models of those, they put that SU behind the dist, and the gauge one down by the oil filter (where big blocks have theirs, FYI). They look quite a bit different, very easy to identify.

the one down at filter is for ECM and the one up at the dizzy is for the dash, on ESC controlled engines the HEI wont get voltage if pressure drops too much and on FI engines the pump power will get cut off if pressure drops too much
