I don’t know how cold some of your places get but i actually have shorter cranking time starting my carb when it had carb then FI it takes less then 2 sec to start it in high 20's out side in the morning but then again i never see anything colder than that rarely in Florida.

"carbs are for lawnmowers".

that said, if you've got money coming out of your ***, EFI is a great way to go, and can be made way better than carb (smoother, more efficient, more power, etc.) But if you're not super rich, a carb can and will make more power any day every day. To each his own.

I switched to carb because I wanted to use Vortec heads on my crate motor, and they didn't make a TPI intake at the time (and I couldn't have afforded the base, runners, and ECM reprogram anyway). The carb has been great though. My car starts up so fast it isn't even funny, even at the coldest it gets here (20s in the mornings). It runs rough for a bit till it gets warmed up but all 3 of my TPI cars did that too, and they actually started harder. I'm pretty happy with the carb setup. With a good cam and the performer RPM intake on top of the Vortec heads it runs real strong. I am really finding myself wanting to get another TPI car to play with the stealthram setup though, nice and cheap for a really good intake...

It seems to me, based on RB83L69's post, that forced induction would override any benefits the TPI setup would have cause it would simple force air in under boost and therefor the whole concept of Tuned port runner become irrelevant cause the forced induction would always create positive pressure behind the valve.

Yes under forced induction the TPI setup over-rides the "tuned effect" giving you power above 6000 RPMS....
Thats What Im getting at.

But during normal street driving your not under boost. therefore, it would seem to me, that during normal street driving you still have all the benefits of a properly working TPI setup, and the "tuned" effect comes into play.

Thats my point.

Just buy a beater car. Save your formula for weekends and fun. Get a little honda or similar car for aroundtown and going to work and all that jazz. Keep you formula carbed. Buy a beater.

Usually when you insure more than one car, the second car is only a few bucks more a month. I know I have my camaro and my MR2 on my insurance and to add my mr2 awas only 4 dollars more a month. I dont know if this specific to California or not, but maybe its something you should look into it.

TPI or Carb.

TPi or Carb..what to choose what to choose. Well I own a 1992 z L98 with the TPI setup and love it. My older brother owns a 1983 z with the L-69 package and quadrajet and it is a hoot to drive but I prefer FI over carbed for a couple of reasons. Fuel mileage for one..I like to have my cake and eat it to..Power and Decent fuel mileage. I have emission checks where I live so that is important. Why fool with something that works? TPI may not be the do all to end all setups but for what it was designed to accomplish it does pretty good in my book. Carbs are cheaper and a bit easier to work on thats about all I will give them. For the ultimate in Tuneability, Reliability and overall performance FI wins hands down. The only drawback per say is cash outlay..$$$ and a crashcourse in learning something new. Thats my opinion for whats its worth...later...
