Would Sportsman II's be overkill?

I have the Ram Jet (383 crate) cam. It's 196/206 @ .050" .431/.451 lift.

I'm going to be using my 48mm TBI (~530 cfm @ 3 in Hg drop) and an Edelbrock Performer 2101 intake with an adapter.

Would the Sportsman II's be too big for this combo? I've searched the archives and found that the Dart Iron Eagles might be an alternative.

I'm thinking 200cc will be too big. The Dart heads seem to flow about the same but they offer them in 180cc runners and 64cc combustion chambers.

A cam swap is not in the near future...unless someone wants to donate a Comp XR264HR-10

The 200 cc runners would be too big, unless you have enough cam and compression to rev them up enough to need that big of a runner. I think it would be sluggish in low rpm. Use the 180 cc runners, i think for the street, you will be alot happier with the throttle response. Id also maybe consider using a performer rpm, unless your gonna keep the rpms down pretty low, its a better midrange/upper mid manifold.

By the way, your swap of a 350 into an astro had to be a PITA. I had 1 with a 4.3 Hated even changin plugs on the damn thing. I like the "dare to be different" thing. Gotta be a blast to see the looks on some kids face when you dust his *** :lala: .

Thanks for the complement. Actually, taking the 4.3 out was a bigger PITA than putting the 350 back in. Sounds backwards, I'd just have to show ya.

My cam runs out around 5000 rpm. So I'll definatly benefit from the Performer intake.

Yikes...I just priced Dart Iron Eagles. Looks like more $$$ for the 180cc intake runner heads than the Sportsman II's.

Ha! For the difference I could buy the Sportsman II's AND the cam I mentioned.

Another very good combo would be to use GM's vortec heads. Very good low/ midrange power. Can get many intakes to match them also. Look at the perf rpm specs. See if you can dig out any old magazine articles. I believe it gives up like 3 hp below 2500, but from 2500 up, its alot better. just an idea. Id definatley look at the vortec heads tho.

I was wondering the same, but I was told the Sportsman IIs should be good for me, though my cam is a bit bigger than yours I believe. And I'm running about 9.3:1 compression once I get the heads.

Vortecs are too expensive. Not initially but I want screw-in studs, big valves, big springs, and milled guides. Some day I plan on going with the cam I mentioned above...just not right now.

Thanks for all the input fellas. I went with the Dart Iron Eagles. I had a 10% off coupon from Summit so I got the 180cc intake runner, 64 cc combustion chamber heads with the 2.02/1.6 valves. I also have a brand new Edelbrock 2101 intake sitting here so buying a Vortec-specific intake for $150 seems like a waste.

I will also be running 9.3:1 once I get the heads on. If I use a .028" thick heads gasket.

I found very specific flow data for these heads which makes my DTD file that much closer to being right.

Mark.
The sportsman heads do run very well, but i really dont think it would be noticeable untill above 5000 rpm or so. They probably flow a little more air, but due to the bigger runner size, the air velocity in the ports would be slower. Just depends on the whole combo, i guess and how high you wanna rev it.

i dont think you lose too much torque though, ive ran my motor with stock heads and sportsman 2's. I dont think I lost any torque at all. just my opinion though

Ive run my car with ported 882's and sportsman 2's and there was no drop in torques but there was a large gain in horsepower. I have had 4 different cams and the heads have worked wonderfully with every one.

200 cc seams big compared to the average stock size of 165 or so for the gen1. type small blocks chevy heads, but look at what the LS1 is running now. Those heads have 200cc intakes from the factory. And the stock LS1 cam while wilder than the L98 grind is not that wild. Yet these heavy cars are running mid to high 13s stock. Maybe it is the design that makes them more streetable, I don't know.

I have been mulling over this for a while for my 350 and at first also thought the 200ccs was to big. When I get the money saved up I'm going to take my chances and go with 200cc anyway. Hopefully I don't fall on my face. I just couldn't stand knowing I spent big bucks on after market heads and the guy next to me was running stock ones with more volume. I know it's stupid.
