can you just re-ring an engine?

the reason i ask is that .. i have a 305 with a pretty decent compression ratio with 416 heads...

it blows a little blue smoke under acceleration.. not much..just enough to let me know its there......

i'm thinking about throwing in a nice cam, rings,,, roller timing ...and a head job.. possibly port....them but.. i doubt i could do that ..

84 305
decent cam
roller timing
head job (does the head need to be worked to fit larger valves?)
q jet
performer intake
etc...

i just want to get rid of that blue smoke...

and for once i would like a motor that can spin the tires..or actually pin my passanger in the seat............i'm sick of this 78 305 cuase its got bad lifters, timing chain, oil pump...and its a low like 8.1 compression truck motor..........

i already have the 305 block...and i want to just spruce it up a bit... something around 250 horse..... cheap..

rob..

Maybe . . . If there is less than .002 wear in the bore

, and no ridge, just lightly hone the cylinders and put it back together.

I once bought a used 350 for $100 that had 65k miles on it. The guy said it had been a strong motor once, but now it desperately needed pistons, rings, and problably a lot more. He He was gonna get a crate motor.

So I bought a kit with .030" over pistons and proceeded to tear the motor down. It had a flat cam on two lobes, and another three lobes were worn slightly. Besides replacing the cam, I put rings, bearings, valve guides and an oil pump in it anyway, and sold it back to him for tidy profit. In reality, we both got a good deal.

As far as your motor goes, you probably have worn valve guides, not worn rings. Chevy valve guides were always good for about 80k miles, and the rings were good for about a 100K. Now that we all have fuel injection, rings last 200k, but the valve guides don't last any longer than they ever did. That was the case with my Astro van and with a friends Camaro recently also.

I hope this helps.

ya, if ur gonna put new rings on, u have to hone the cylinders.. otherwise with bad cylinder wall glazing ur gonna make things worse..

there is so much and it's all easy to replace if you have it down for rings it'd be stupid not to finish the job. if money is an issue and the engine still runs wait till you can do it right.

Ditto.
The minimum you should do is hone, rings, rod bearings, and get the rods checked for straightness and have the bearing journals re-rounded. Crank bearings would be a good idea but you can get away without as long as you leave the crank bearings alone.
