Jumping it will make a heat soaked starter work,,the extra amps do something.....I once had to replace 3 "rebuilt" alternators before I got a good one.....now about that $50.00....give it to Blackened....he can spell battery.

Doubt it could be the starter. Could be a heat soaked starter. Have you tried a high tourque starter? It is half the size. Or anything to disapate the heat from the starter? What do the wires look like? Are they in good shape?

By the way it has been a while since you have posted, have you fixed the problem?

My friend is having the same problem in his 91 TPI Z28...it ended up being the VATS module. Have it checked out, and also check the chip in the key, if it is worn down, have it replaced.

When you replaced the starter, you replaced the solinoid right?

I had the exact same problem with my car when I first bought it. The owner showed me a grey wire which he said to touch to the positive terminal of the battery when that happened.

It would spark, and get power directly to the starter. Is this what you meant by, "jump starting"?

I lived with this annoying problem for months, untill my brother in law came to visit, and said, "oh, that's the starter solinoid, my camaro did this too".

He jumped underneath my car, and replaced the solinoid, and boom, I haven't ever had this problem again, and it's been about 3 years now.

It was such a weird problem, but this is the way it was fixed for me.

Good luck!

Ok gentlemen,

Here's the deal, I had a rice burner (97 Eclipse) and it did the exact same thing. I had the battery, starter, solenoid and everything else checked. All was fine. It was just as Sciguyjim says, the battery had a crack in one of the plates that moved over when it got hot. It moved back when it got cool. Even the load test came back ok. I had them (Autozone) test it over and over like 10 times. Finally came back with a bad cell. Put in a new battery and never had a problem with it after that. Good luck, Thomas

hmmmm

sounds like it could be the fusable linke which looks like a piece of wire that is coonected and shrink wrapped to the terminal, the starter relay could be bad and have you thought of the ignition switch?

Ok guys, I wish everyone would get off the starter thing >>..LOL I replaced the starter, starter and solenoid, cable etc..... It kept doing it and got to the point yesterday where it wouldnt start at anytime without a jump and even then it wouldnt.....Well today I took it into the shop and they said someone had hooked up a relay that my alarm was still hooked up to and it was keeping it from getting enough juice to start. I dont know how that is but its working now. Does anyone know why I would have a relay with my alarm and safety switch going to it? I dont have my alarm hooked up either............As most of you remember it was 3 months ago that I found out I had the damn thing when it scared me to death when I hooked up a fuse. Thanx guys...

yes, you had a starter kill relay which would cause this problem, although I'm not quite sure how it would relate to being warm, but anyway, it would be so that without the alarm being disabled via a key fob it would not allow the vehicle to start.

Could you swap in a battery from a friends car for a quick test. A bad battery could exibit different symptoms.

Ok keep your $50..... a new starter not always means a good starter.....you tricked us with the alarm thing.....should have guessed, they are the culprit often.

Im sorry Riley, I could see how bad you wanted that money. So was the alarm killing my voltage or something? I honestly dont understand. Holio, I have done several battery swaps so I know its good. Now to return my old one and make em think its the new one I guess I need to brush up on my electrical skills. But if it happens again..........you guys will know that I have already checked the starter 30 times and spent a bunch of money and waisted a lot of time for a simple fix......GRRRR!!! Thanx a bunch.... Now for one more question in a new post

Ignition control module

Try replacing the ignition control module like Sonar_un suggested. And dont forget to use the grease that comes with it!!!!! Maybe even buy a high performance one! This worked for me.

ignition switch or starter relay

Sounds like you have changed everything but the ignition switch and starter relay and a long shot the ignition module. They are all worth looking at I would start with the least expensive and move on to the next. There is no way to test an ignition switch or ignition module your problem is intermittent and you will not be able to duplicate it probably when testing. Good luck. If it works out keep the 50 dollars.

well I guess I'll have to work a little more overtime to pay for the hot tank and magnaflux on my 400 block....sounds like you hae it narrowed down to the alarm...good luck with it and to tell ya te truth,,,I just wanted to see if just 1 person would actually pay up...seems like whenever someone offers cash....they solve it themselves...Good way to get a response though...

Some alarm systems disable the starter and kill the fuel system....

Listen carefully . . . . .

Turn off the radio, turn off the fan blower motor (AC), and listen carefully. When you turn the key "on", you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds. When your motor starts properly, your hear this , right?

Now, my question is, do you hear the fuel pump run on the occasions when it won't start. If you cannot hear the pump, it is either a relay or your VATS (vehicle anti-theft system).

Good luck, Don

Well if someone would have solved it I would have paid. I have been dealing with this for almost a year now and every mechanic has said they didnt know and then I take it to some no name mechanic and within ten minutes.....BOOM problem solved. I actually went thru this post to make sure someone didnt mention the alarm because I would gladly pay them.

I'm surprised Mark didnt get in on this one, He most likeley would have had the answer. Ive seen him post this sollution before. I dont heare my pump running unless I get right down by the tank and listen....I have never had an intermitant fuel pump problem before...low pressure yes...seems when the pump is dead...the pump is dead.....

I never doubted you SlowStangEater....kinda like the lottery, I have never KNOWN anyone that one....

Damn you're greedy!!! LOL. I'll send you a christmas card LOL. I figured something is loose. I put the A/C or Heat on high and I feel a faint breeze from the vents and a decent one from the defrost vents. Is the heater box in in the dash? I bet thats gonna be a fun one. :lala:

The fuel pump thingy is not as crazy as it sounded, since the VAT's kills the pump & starter SWITCH when activated.
