Is this the starter or something electrical??

Sometimes, as you might have read on here before, my car will not crank at all, leaving me wherever it feels like when it does it. I had my mechanic take a look at it and he tested it all day, couldn't find nothing and it started everytime for him.

I HAVE to get this fixed because it does it randomly, usually when hot but its done it when not also. Any1 know exactly what this is I could tell him to replace instead of just replacing a starter that might not need it??

try the ignition switch in the column. you sound like you're having similar problems that i had last week. next time it wont start, check for power at starter soleniod. if theres no power, its probably the ignition switch.....

Car: currently thirdgenless!!!
Do you get a clicking sound. I get that about half the time I try to start. Clicking for a couple and then start. Another member on the board said he had the same trouble and solved it by replacing the hot wire to the starter. I have not tried that yet, but I will.

Starter problem

I have had the same problem for awhile now. In southern California it does the same when hot but sometimes whenever it feels like it. I believe the solution is replace the starter wire with 2 gauge which will give more power and help eliminate heat soak. Another thing is that when a starter starts to go it is not able to have preventative things done. I bought a heat shield and only put it on AFTER the problem started to appear again. The solenoid and starter are new now and I have covered them before installation this time. I have also now replaced the battery and checked the main connections to make sure they are good. I found a fray on the block ground that could also be causing this and it was not easy to see it was right before the location of where it goes into the block. A few people on the site recommended the 2 gauge and it seems a good solution it also is easy and cheap. 4 bucks for six feet at OSH or home depot and five minutes of pulling the old one and installing the new one. I thought it would be hard but it was easy to push on it and have someone watch where it went. I hope this might help my car did the same for the mechanic who said he tightened a ground and it should be good he also charged 60 and it did not help for long if at all. Email me if you need any help or pictures if you want to do this.

i had a monte carlo that did this all the time....

my problem was the starter it would arc out and cause a short so when u fed power to the starter the car would do nothing but drain the battery and eventually need a jump.....

or it could be ur bendix next time it does it take a hammer or anything u can beat on the starter with.. if uc an get to it and smack it a few times see if that helps if so ur bendix is getting hot. and sticking,

good luck

iroc,
I have power at the starter.

azvolfan,
I get no clicking at all.

JMFNX,
Is it still doing that stuff to you??

boggledinstl, "my problem was the starter it would arc out and cause a short so when u fed power to the starter the car would do nothing but drain the battery and eventually need a jump....."

I ALSO get this once in a while, not sure if its the same thing causing it all. I'd like to try all the cheap fixes 1st before I go and replace a starter and soleniod. I just gotta know what to try. Who knows, it might not be the actual starter or soleniod itself.

Thanks so far every1.
