K&N 66-1401 X-STREAM TOP FILTER - 305

Happy new year Third Genr’s!!

I’m sure someone’s posted this before but I couldn’t seem to find anything - Apologize in advance if so.

Has anyone tried replacing their stock TBI air cleaner lid with a K&N 66-1401? Is it a direct replacement? If not, any concerns in trying to make it fit?

I did a 305 to 350 swap years ago and feel like it needs more surface area to draw in air. I have a 3” cowl hood that would allow for fresh air to draw from.

Any suggestions in trying to achieve an additional filter surface area of atleast 34 insq?

Thanks for all your feedback

Connect an air filter restriction indicator to the clean side of the air filter housing. Verify an actual lack of adequate airflow through the existing filter.
I bought one air filter restriction indicator through Amazon; but since then I've gotten all I want from the Treasure Yard. Common on Diesels, becoming common on lots of other vehicles.

Wild Guesses: 1. That engine is getting all the air it needs. 2. Engine does not need hot underhood air allowed into the intake manifold. 3. If that cowl hood isn't sealed to the air cleaner (which fixes #2) then you're screwing with the airflow through the radiator. ALL the cowl-induction, shaker-scoop installations by the manufacturers assures that the hood-sourced air goes to the intake system, not "flooding the whole compartment." And yet, it's uncommon for typical "hot rodders" to bother with the ducting and seals to mimic the proper engineering on display through GM, Ford, Chrysler, and AMC.

The carburetor guys just hate those filtered air cleaner lids. Disrupts airflow through the carb, upsets the air bleeds, results in loss of power and goofy driveability issues. Not sure how they'd affect a TBI, though.

I ran one years ago because it looked cool. It didn't do anything because its right up on the underside of the hood. Also, the 170hp LO3 gets enough air from the sides of an open element.

Re: K&N 66-1401 X-STREAM TOP FILTER - 305

It looks like you have swapped your L03 5.0L TBI engine for a L05 5.7L TBI engine. Your engine is choked by the TBI air scoop, duct, snorkel, air filter, the TBI, the TBI intake manifold, the TBI heads, the TBI camshaft, the TBI exhaust manifolds, the TBI single cat T merge pipe, the TBI cat, and the TBI cat back exhaust.

TBI F bodies have an air filter that is 2 1/2 inches tall and TBI trucks have an air filter that is 3 7/16 inches tall. The air filters are the same inside and outside diameter. Switching to a deeper TBI truck air cleaner lid, longer stud & wingnut, and 15/16 inch taller air filter element gives you at least as much air filter flow as a stock TBI truck.

I've done this on a 1992 Firebird with the base smooth hood and it clears. If it clears a Firebird hood it for sure clears a Camaro hood and damn sure clears a 3 inch cowl induction hood.

Is this swap going to gain you any power? Probably not.

Somewhere around 1992 the TBI trucks switched from a single stud and wingnut air cleaner lid to a dual stud and wingnut lid. Either will work you just have to get the matching lid, studs and wingnuts. If you get the single style you can also run your stock Camaro lid and have a 15/16 inch gap around the top with the taller air filter and your engine will make fun sounding induction noises.
