92 RS 305 TBI New Owner

Hey everyone,
Just picked up this 92 RS 305 TBI for 3k, and excited to learn about this platform.

Car didn't have a battery and owner stated engine didn't run when I picked it up, but confirmed engine wasn't locked up by turning it over by hand.

Installed a new battery, and car doesn't start. Turning the key to the on position I hear the fuel pump, the security light comes on then turns off (and stays off), service engine soon warning comes on and stays on. If I try to start I get 1 click, the brake light comes on, and the radio display dims almost completely. I'm assuming it could be a bad starter and wanted to check here to see if there's anything additional I should look out for?

Under the drivers side kick panel is the starter enable relay. Jumper it to see if it will crank.

I'll give that a shot, thanks!

Whack the starter with a hammer, solenoid could be stuck. Also check your battery connections and grounds. If that fails, I'd pull the starter, put 12V to it, and see if it does anything.

That's what I was planning on doing before ordering a new one. I'm hoping it's just a bad starter

How about measuring voltage at the battery (no load) and comparing it to voltage at the battery when the key is turned to "crank"?

Or performing a voltage drop (VD) test on the starter wiring--power and ground sides of the circuit.

Didn't even think of that since it's a new optima red top. Doesn't hurt to perform a VD test though - thanks for sharing that!

My most-recent Optima Red-top lasted about six months, then went dead every three-four weeks after that until I got rid of it just prior to it's one-year anniversary. I'd slow-charge it overnight, and it'd be good for another three-four weeks. The alternator and starter had plenty of miles on them. Replaced 'em both with no improvement, tested the vehicle for parasitic draw (OK) and VD (OK).

Got a different battery. Problem solved, for several years now.

Mexican Opitmas are garbage. The older, USA Optimas seemed to be pretty reasonable.
