Cam for 350 tbi, GM performance lt1 cam
Hello:
Can anyone please give me their thoughts on this cam. I’m thinking of using this in the 350 tbi that I am building. I might use the stock 350 tbi heads. Compared to my current cam in my 305 that I freshened up 17 years ago which was a speed pro cs1079r. I never ended up doing any chip tuning, granted it could of ran better. It did idle very smooth and the plugs always looked good when I did tuneups over the years
I think the ecm relearned itself it definitely had tons of bottom end, especially in the cool dry weather. It did seem to be a little sluggish in the humid hot weather. Also seemed to run out of steam above 55-65 mph. I even remember having some people on this form helping me back in 2006 when I first freshened my 305 up. I recall that it was running rich and I ended up just going with it back then. I was young and did not have much money to invest in some tuning stuff. In closing it’s been a great daily driver and I would get about 17mpg in the city. Here is a link to the cam. I would greatly appreciate some help on this new chapter with my car

Re: Cam for 350 tbi, GM performance lt1 cam
Also, I just found another cam, this is a summit racing brand. I’m having a gut feeling that the gm performance cam may have too high of a advertised duration. I can’t seem to find a speed pro like what’s currently in my 305 anymore for a good price anymore. Also, I recall in an article in a magazine years ago that having a higher lift value in the exhaust in comparison to the intake is better for the exhaust scavenging effect???

I think that the Melling 22221 is a clone of that cam.
I'd expect it to work pretty well.
The TBI swirl-port heads are turds.

Thank You for your response, I know the swirl port heads are probably not gonna be good for top end and don’t have any ability to be improved.I was thinking about vortec 350 heads. Will there be that much more tuning. I recall there was a guy on this forum by the name “Heslekrants” about 10 years ago that used a stock vortec 350 in its entirety and just used cop car injectors,8746ecm and a 350 esc module and knock sensor. I’m going to the junkyard tomorrow to look.

The Vortec heads are wonderful on applications that don't require EGR.
If you need--or want--EGR, they're a mess.
You'll need to drill a hole in the deck surface to keep the coolant bypass working. I'd drill both heads, so that you can't pull the engine down a few years from now, and then reassemble with the "wrong" head on the right-side bank.

I figured I’d give you more info, when I bought my car it came without the air injection pump and diverter valve and the holes in the stock exhaust manifolds were plugged with cast iron npt pipe plugs. It ran well so I replaced the manifolds with shorty headers and a high flow catalytic converter. I’m just trying to get a little more power maybe , do I really need the egr??

Do you have emissions testing?
Do you have problems with detonation?
Can you "tune" the computer to compensate for these modifications?

Re: Cam for 350 tbi, GM performance lt1 cam
I don’t have emissions testing, with my current 305 tbi I never had problems with detonation. I don’t mind getting into some tuning. I downloaded tunerpro rt to just play around with. However i was going to go with an ostrich emulator but it has been discontinued on the moates web site. It’s a really nice day outside tomorrow and there are tons of 350 vortec’s in the junkyard. I’m just really confused should I go with I don’t want to spend 1500 on a set of heads. Also, I only want to build this engine once. I hear that the vortecs are the best factory gm casting. As for the lo3 and lo5 swirl ports I hear they really are just crippling. I really need someone’s honest opinion

An LT1 or L98 cam would be a good upgrade for a TBI engine. I'm running a rebuilt L98 on a bored out TBI and bored stock intake and it runs great and gets 23mpg even with 3.73s.

Put together a 350 .040 with vortec heads, L98 cam, bbc 2" throttle body on an adapter on a edelbrock performer spreadbore intake, 74#/hr injectors and shorty headers. Didn't do so well on the stock tune. Ran pig rich on start up. Just wanted to see if it would start. Adjusted the BPW to reflect the 357 and 74#/hr injectors. Also increased AE due to the larger TB and decreased it due to the bigger injectors. Sent bro home no tune as it was getting late. Immediately texted me that it was back firing. Day 2, dropped a LT1 spark map into the tune and it was a night and day difference. Trimmed the VE maps accordingly 128+-5 and haven't touched it since. Haven't touched PE too but when bro punched it, it sunk me back in the seat something the tired 305 never did. Almost forgot to mention this is in a FSC truck. It's his daily driver and hasn't brought it back for additional tuning.

Thanks everyone, I had a bad feeling about the higher duration in the 300’s. I hear this cam is used in boats. The cam that I found that is used in a 1993-1994 lt1 is this melling replacement.’https://www.jegs.com/i/Melling/689/MC1335/10002/-1

I guess this is the same cam that goes in the ramjet crate engine. I heard it was used in marine engines
