Quick exhaust question

Okay, so the guy before me who had this car, cut the cat off and just replaced it with pipe. I know these cars had air stuff, and it whistles at idle. And Since It is kind of annoying, what all should come off for when I set up the exhaust properly? I know some of it has to deal with the tbi, but i dont know what will hurt the car exactly if i do take all of the air stuff off... I know the manifolds got to come off, but what else? Im tired of a hi pitched noise in my american muscle car!

Re: Quick exhaust question

A leaking tbi gasket will cause a whistle at idle.

As for the AIR system..just take it all out and plug the inlets on the exhaust manifolds. No need to remove them, unless you upgrade to headers. There is a small metal tube that goes down to the cat converter from the AIR diverter valve. If the system is all intact, then maybe the whistle is coming from this tube or the port that supplied the tube? Anyways, information on the AIR removal is easy to find on this site. If you remove the smog pump, either install a delete pulley or use a different size belt and re-route it. There is a tech article on this. https://www.thirdgen.org/serpentine

Re: Quick exhaust question

+ the AIR pump can also produce a high pitch sound with the air tubes removed.

Re: Quick exhaust question

I did look at the air delete serpentine system. . What would be the easiest way to run headers then. Or the proper way? Ill lookinto that link up there

Re: Quick exhaust question

To delete AIR you can also just remove the pump and use a shorter accessory belt, belt size and part numbers have been posted some times already.

To keep AIR, get a cat with AIR provision, that matches the size of the piping, and connect air pipes and hoses like it came from the factory.
This is a popular 3" cat for thirdgens with 3" intermediate exhaust pipe http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...t/model/camaro

If you delete AIR, remove pump and tubing. Can use any cat that works without AIR.

Direct replacement headers with and without AIR plumbing are commonly available.

Re: Quick exhaust question

Would it be more beneficial to get the air header systems for better fuel economy along with any egr in it or just rip those badboys right out instead? My apologies for sounding like a dope just wanna be sure. I dont live in a olace that has to worry about emissions but next school year I might be moving into am area like that..

Re: Quick exhaust question

The performance benefit to removing AIR is between minor and none.

It is illegal to remove emissions devices, and it will be expensive to replace if you decide to put it back on. For a race-only car, go ahead and remove it.

Pro to keeping AIR:
- it is already there. just fix it if it needs fixing.
- it is good for the environment. You like breathing clean air, right? Do your part.
- it will be harder to sell in an area that requires emission testing.
- little to no performance loss.

Pro to removing AIR:
- fewer parts, fewer problems.
- engine looks a lot cleaner without.
- car will run just fine without.
- catalytic converter will work just fine without AIR, just not as efficient.

Re: Quick exhaust question

Would removing the air also caise a service engine light to come on and turn off whenever it wants?

Re: Quick exhaust question

SEL? I doubt it. There is no feedback to the AIR system. It just pumps air. A simply pair of solenoids on the diverter, with on/off wiring. I don't think the computer was made smart enough to look for a specific resistance like the LT1/CAGS/skip-shift needing a resistor to avoid a trouble code.

Re: Quick exhaust question

Deleting AIR does not set any error codes.
