How well will a TBI run with a LT1 cam?
My 86 TA is my wifes car with a TBI 350 out of a 91 chevy with the TBI.
How much power will it have with:
LT1 cam from a 94 Vette
Ported and polished vortec heads
Performer intake
I would like to see 350 HP, i was wanting to see what the TBI guys with knowledge have to say, i herd the TBI cars like LT1 cams. Will i have to burn a chip/order one?
I would like to avoid going to carbed in this car and keep it injected for my wife.
Thanks a ton for any good input.
I did not search because i didnt want to, so sorry.

Re: How well will a TBI run with a LT1 cam?
Check out this link. The posts under my name describe my experience with Vortec heads, LT1 cam and performer RPM intake. FYI, all my mods were done on a 305, but I would think you wouldn't have tuning issues even though it's a 350... although for max power, I'm sure a tune would help immensely. As far as power, I would assume you should see well over 300 hp, I'm sure others will chime in on this. IMO, I would run a bigger cam than the LT1 on a 350, but that could lead to added costs to the heads for added lift capabilities and then you probably would need a tune.

Good luck, Matt

If swapping cams, I'd make it worthwhile and go with a LT4 production cam at minimum, and better yet a ZZ3 cam.
I recently purchased a take-out ZZ3 for $75 shipped from a forum member here, and I believe he has more of them. The LT4 can be bought for even less.
Hopefully Fast355 chimes in here with TBI tuning tips for those cam options.
I can't help you in that department; I don't know the TBI tuning nuances.

Well, if i have no issues and do not need a tune i will be happy. It will have hedman hedders(shortys). I just like the idea of keeping the reliability on my 86 for my wife, i was going to go carb, but it is not going to be a radical setup anyways.

You'll have to tune for any mods that add power. Due to the design of a sped density FI setup it's just the name of the game.
I'd be surprised if you could make it around the block with that setup without tuning.

So the chances of a mail order tune being decent is not verry good then? That is crappy, just when i was wanting to give the TBI a shot.

No reason to give up on TBI, just learn to burn your own. It's actually cheaper to get the equipment to do it yourself than it is for a mail order tune. Check out the "Free Tune" sticky for a primer on the basic steps and what is needed.

You shouldnt have much trouble tuning your combo once you get all the equipment. Its a fairly common and mild combination. As stated you can get all of the tuning equipment and tune it yourself for less than the price of a mail order chip. Plus you will be way more happy with how it runs. One word of warning though, I have found that fuel injection tuning can become addictive!! Good luck.

You still need a Laptop to log data.
..A cable...program...burner..and chips.

Re: How well will a TBI run with a LT1 cam?
This is why I went carb... well, that and the fact that there is no such thing as a TBI Injector with a known rating. Even if you find a common one it seems there are 5 million different specs on what it's lb/hr rating should be, and that varies with fuel pressure, and dont forget the oodles of them out there that are the venerated "Cop car" injectors or "Super Interceptor Special" injectors from some rare car and no one has any idea what the hell they really are.
Good luck tuning it, I'd love to do it myself, but the math (read budget) didn't add up for me. I just got a 650 double pumper for mine. I may end up doing the TBI thing later on, but I'm still a little skeptical for the reasons I just mentioned.
