New steering box

UPDATE borgeson is 3 turns lock to lock and weighs 28 lbs same if not more than stock

Turn one doesn't sell there boxes for are cars in need of one that has the improved response with rack and pinion valve technology that is also light weight, there was another vendor that sold upgraded boxs but forgot what they where called.

Re: NEED NEW STEERING BOX ALTERNATIVES TO TURN 1

give Marty at powersteering.com a call.

they have done a lot of boxes for a lot of us here on TGO. I put my box through the ringer with autocross and it has been spot-on .

Re: NEED NEW STEERING BOX ALTERNATIVES TO TURN 1

I spoke to turn 1 on the phone a few days ago. They said they can rebuild our factory box for #350 plus whatever options you choose.

Re: NEED NEW STEERING BOX ALTERNATIVES TO TURN 1

the one that i remembered was from flaming river i just discovered psc, FR doesn't list are application, but according to turn1 there is a issue getting the boxes. i also discovered a bit cheaper alternative from borgeson does any one have any experience with there box vs the top lines one like turn 1 or psc not road racing but want to loose the slop while getting the newer feel along with some weight savings but dont want to downgrade from the stock i have the high option 2/1/4 turn one re doing the engine and bay and noticed the stock one is leaking a bit and don't want to re use it with all the work going into the bay

Re: NEED NEW STEERING BOX ALTERNATIVES TO TURN 1

I talked to Turn one, and the owner said they'd consider doing a run of 10:1 or 8:1 conversion boxes if enough ppl were interested.
They'd basically do a run of CNC internals to convert our stock boxes to faster ratios.

Send him an email if you are willing to buy one.
(Not gonna be cheap though probably $600+)

Re: NEED NEW STEERING BOX ALTERNATIVES TO TURN 1

Sweet Manufacturing is the comparable alternative to Turn One. The OP just hasn't realized that yet.

A 600 series box will cost you thousands of dollars. The cost has at least double since COVID. I have a Turn One 600 series and honestly it's not that impressive. Very heavy feel, although I may have done that to myself with choice of T-bar (but how am I supposed to know?). Stock box centers nicer and takes less input just cruising down the highway. Never had a complaint with my stock box, just changed it for something to do. I actually prefer stock but I'll be darned if I'm changing that out again so the 600 box stays there.

To be fair, I never did run the stock box with the sticky tires I have now. My Turn One was valved to handle up to 10.5" wide sticky tires without straining. I also have the modified steering pump (kind of silly to put all that money in a box without the pump).

I also used Marty, nice guy. I did the the DSE shaft as well, cars incredibly tight and responsive. My original box had 48K miles, never road raced, but even with the Astro Van shaft, had a ton of on center slop.

pre covid i had my eye on the turn one it was just under a grand the other 600 series brands that i was researching at that time where flaming river and arg i just found out about sweet in this thread

PSC is selling there 600 box for just under a gran and was told it was almost 3 turns lock to lock sweet has them for around $1500 and they have 700 boxes for $800

yes im also changing for something to do, im not running gen one steering pumps

ive talked with lee power steering and he also had the same views about 600 vs 800 and doesnt even sell 600 boxes anymore i may be sending my stock 800 box out for him to rebuild and do his upgrades

do you know how much your turn one boxed weighed? also im still confused bout the ratio, lee said something about the stock box having stops in it but all my boxes (i have 4 z28 boxes) there all at 2-1/4 lock to lock what would that be called? 12.1? bc the borgeson and PSC advertise 12.7 but they are 3 turns

I didn't weigh my Turn One and don't remember whether is was lighter or same (basically wasn't paying attention at the time). It is a bit smaller than stock. I'm not sure how many different stops are in the 3rd gen boxes, and I think tire width was part of that decision making.

GM trucks come with 600 boxes and they're all over the junkyards. Maybe if you can find a kit to change gear ratio then you can build it at home.

Keep in mind that the stock 3rd gen quick ratio boxes are really sought after by other GM muscle car folks for upgrading steering on older cars. They would all kill for a box like you have. I don't know, sometimes the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side.

No worries, that's why I said it twice because I wasn't sure it grabbed your attention the first time.

Re: New steering box

I'm looking around at different pumps and boxes too. I got a like new almost brand new 3rd gen box and steering shaft from a guy but got home and realized it is not stamped XH on the front so it isn't the quick ratio. Booo!
