5th gen IRS in third gen

Hello allI had the crazy idea of putting the complete suspension out of a 2011 Camaro into my 1986 Camaro. I thought I'd share the results:

Left rear

I'll try and get some more pics later today. Overall I'd say to those who would like to do this it is quite a project. It took me three weeks or so of evenings to get it in. And to answer the question of why on earth did I do this: no other than I could. I thought it would be cool.

Hell yeah, that's what fuels the hobby.

What are your other plans with the car? If you're willing to tackle that job, then I definitely want to know what's next!

Re: 5th gen IRS in third gen

As far as what else is planned I have some ideas for putting on some 5th gen Camaro front brakes and rotors. But bigger brakes need bigger rims, bigger rims rub my sway bar, and so on. Of course I'd like to put a giant turbocharger under the hood too. Time will tell what actually happens.
Pages and pages of good info on this forum though. Thanks to those that have unknowingly answered many of my questions in their posts.

Very cool. There was a local selling the complete rear end assembly from a 2019 ZL1 near me for $750. It was very tempting but I passed.

Re: 5th gen IRS in third gen

Hey Knivesjmd, i am considering this swap and would like to pick your brain about some things:

What is the overall wheel mounting surface distance across the assembly?
Is the ride height "taller" than what you expected? My worry would be that the cradle can't be recessed up into the car to the correct spot without a lot of cutting.

thanks

Re: 5th gen IRS in third gen

Stewdesignjts, I unfortunately no longer have the car and don't remember what the hub-to-hub width was. I can tell you that the 4th gen 17" ss wheels fit on it just fine. I also made two 18x10.5 rims from four steel 5th Gen rims and was running those on the back with no problems. Hopefully that helps with some guessing on the overall width. The cradle can't really go up further unless you want to start cutting into the unibody 'frame rails'. I had the four cradle mounting points directly (after making appropriate mounting surfaces) on the frame rails. I thought it sat just as level as before.
Hope that helps. Good luck on your build.

I found this singular picture of a side view. Like I said, I thought it stayed pretty level.
