Suspension Ugrades-BMR

I've been reading a lot of good threads on suspension and I have seen that most problems with our suspension is that bushings and other suspension components have had quite the beating over the past 25+ years. After doing some reading on recent forums, I have been looking into doing some major suspension upgrades to my Camaro. It's a 1992 with the 1LE, and LS swapped making around 410HP to the wheels. I know BMR has quality products and I stumbled across these kits. What are your thoughts? I planned on putting an LSA supercharger within the next 2 years so I want some good quality suspension to be able hold the power. This car is not a daily driver. I do go to the track to have some fun, but also drive on the street so I'm looking for a good package that would satisfy my wants. Looking forward to hearing some feedback!

You want a drag car or a good handling car? Those particular BMR kits are aimed at drag racers and the car will handle like **** in corners. Neither is right or wrong, just want to make sure you have realistic expectations.

Mainly drag racing, but I do not want it to handle poorly. These cars have great potential to be great handling cars apparently, and I do not want to take that away. At the same time, I do not go out to drive fast and handle corners nicely (every once in a while I do). In other words, I am looking for a good balance between the two. More on the drag racing side but re-iterating myself, to not take away handling good around corners. Is this possible?

Re: Suspension Ugrades-BMR

Drag racers use coil overs for weight reduction and more choices of springs. It's a HORRIBLE idea on the street. The spring perches are located under the front subframe. Coilover conversions move the spring to the shock towers which is a lot weaker. I don't mean a little weaker.... I mean A LOT weaker. Car wasn't made for that. It's not a matter of if you'll blow out the strut towers, but when you'll blow out the strut towers. The other big drawback is the springs want to occupy much of the same real estate as the wheels and tires. You'll need narrow front wheels and tires.

They use a massive rear sway bar to control body roll during launch. It's waaaaaay too much sway bar for cornering and the back end will oversteer like mad.

I've never had the BMR short torque arm, but I did have the UMI equivalent. The bump-out in the cross-bar that goes under the exhaust pipe kept striking the road. I couldn't get my car onto the trailer without adding height to the ramps with wood planks. Couldn't drive onto the tire alignment rack at the tire store. And I feared that some day I would hit something immovable and tear up the car. One day I was sitting in traffic and it hung up on a freakin' tree root and that was the last straw. Cut it all out and made my own torque arm.

Sounds like a headache of its own. Thank you for your input. What would you recommend for my application? It's a street car but want to make good numbers on the track. Is there a particular kit you recommend? Or would you just replace individual suspension parts for my application?

Re: Suspension Ugrades-BMR

I've considered that, but that would take away the fun of driving the car on the street. I'm just looking for some suspension upgrades that will keep good handling but not break from hard launches on the track.

Re: Suspension Ugrades-BMR

I'd recommend emailing support@umiperformance.com and we can design a package for you.

Like mentioned above you're not going to have a winning road race car that is super comfortable on the highway that also cuts 1.2 60ft.

We can design a system to do most things moderately well if we spell out the compromises. When we use Viking shocks and struts we can make the car capable but the ride feels completely different than if we use Koni's. And Koni's never really drag race all that well because even with the front at full soft, the rebound isn't very soft. If we spring it to handle crisply then it doesn't transfer weight as well as it does if we spring it relatively soft.

Any questions let us know.

Re: Suspension Ugrades-BMR

Hi, New here. I just ordered a BMR K Member, I want to go with a handling setup, who would you recommend for that K member and suspension? Im reading the BMR is for drag, I don't want that.
