Lowering versus stock

i don't know if anyone else has had the same experience......

I have owned 2 cars with stock suspension... 85Z and 89 IROC... both cars handled and turned beautifully.... could carve canyons with those...

Bought my 92Z with a previously lowered suspension.. about 1 inch... but this car has never felt as good... (Looks killer) I have done a lot to try to fix this....
- Totally rebuilt front end equipment.. new A-arms, bushings, sway bar, wonder bar
- Went through 3 different steering boxes.. 2 rebuilt, 1 upgraded new
- New power steering pump
- wears front tires like there is no tomorrow... maybe 10k miles
- had the front end re-aligned twice
- tried 2 different tires
- grind tires on body at full lock

Just can't get the car to drive and feel as good with 1 inch lowering springs as the others do with stock geometry.... in 8 years I have never figured this out.. guess i will stay stock height in the future...

Re: Lowering versus stock

You did not mention which lowering springs you are running.
I have had great luck with my Eibach Pro kit and can completely tell the difference from stock springs as far as the stiffness. I would go back and double check your camber/camber plates for broken rubber if still stock. Also have the alignment done and check there numbers as some shops don't use a computer alignment machine. You shouldn't be going thru front tires like that if all the suspension is in good condition, that's the give away sign to your handling problems

Re: Lowering versus stock

I wish i knew what springs were in there but they were done by a previous owner... at least 2 owners and 15 years ago...

Both alignments were done by the best tire shop in town and they use a computer alignment system... i have the printouts...

I have to get new tires to pass NYS safety inspection so i will have it done...again....

The ONLY thing not replaced has been the plates.... something ... probably the only thing i have never done on third gen suspension... I hear mixed reviews on the aftermarket ones...

I agree with 85. Springs and dampers make all the difference. I have Bilsteins and UMI springs and it looks great, rides great, and handles great - much better than my stock setup which was not/could not be OEM. I tried the KYB and Moog springs for my stock setup and was not very happy with it.

I had kyb adjustables on the 85 with stock springs and I was very happy with it... Now I have kyb adjustables with unknown lowering springs and it just doesn't feel great ...at least not the steering.

I have Eibach Pro Kit on my 91 TA and love them. If I am not mistaken the name is listed on the springs but I think it is a German made spring? The last time I had an alignment the guy under the car said that they were German and I know that they were Eibach because I ordered them and installed them. Hope that helps.

Re: Lowering versus stock

Has anyone made changes to their steering from stock... or changes to their alignment specs?
