AC Delco 503-340 front struts

Hi Guys. I've recently fit 2 x AC Delco 503-340 front struts and new upper mounts to My 84 TA. I'm confused as to how i'm supposed to tighten and torque the strut to upper mount nut. Is there a special tool as a spanner or socket doesn't seem to work or else I have the wrong size. there also seems to be a gap between the bottom of the nut and top of the mount.
Any help appreciated guys, or is this gap supposed to be there?

Re: AC Delco 503-340 front struts

The gap is not correct, nut needs to be tight. Use a pair of vice grips (really tight) across the flats on the top of the strut, then tighten the nut. Best to use a box wrench on the nut, so place that over the strut prior to the vice grips.

RBob.
