Is it possible my steering column shaft is twisted?
Hi everyone. Ever since I've owned my camaro the steering wheel has been clocked about 45 degrees off center. I brought it in to the alignment shop and they couldn't get it to straighten out any. They said the steering was aligned after they were done though. I replaced the steering box from one in my parts car, that didn't change anything either. So I'm wondering if the rag joint shaft is maybe bad or maybe the shaft In the steering column is twisted? When i put the steering wheel centered the end of the shaft where the hole is for the mid shaft bolts to and the two flat parts of the shaft are is not perpendicular to the ground, it's about 45 degrees off. Is it supposed to be? Sorry, I had a hard time trying to explain that. I should try and put pics of it on here! Any suggestions would be appreciated!! Thanks!!

Is it a stock or aftermarket steering wheel?

Hello. It was with the stock one and an aftermarket one. The steering wheel could only go on one way because of the splines on the column.

Well I was going to suggest that the steering wheel was a couple of splines off.
Has the pitman arm ever been removed. It could be off by a coupe of splines too.

Wrecks can do funny things to steering parts. I have seen the pitman shaft in a steering box twisted, which is some thick steel. While the column should be insulated from torsional force from the chassis, it may have taken another kind of force.

Re: Is it possible my steering column shaft is twisted?
the problem was still there after changing out the steering box with the attached pitman arm. I'm wondering if maybe someone can check their car to see what the position of the bolt is on the steering column shaft where the mid shaft attaches to. I no longer have my parts car to compare... thanks!

Jmd, thanks a lot for checking on that for me!! It really helps me out since I don't know anyone in my area that owns a third gen. Sounds like my column is screwed up inside. When I got my car it had been in a wreck, so I'm assuming that had something to do with the column.
