What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

I found these on Spohn's web site. On the surface, they seem to be useful but then I started thinking about having never heard of a shock binding.

No-Bind lower shock relocation mounts

It has some pictures of how it mounts and again, I can see in theory how it might help. But again, I've never even read about rear shock bind.

Thoughts?

It means subscribed, he wants to see what people say.

I am curious as well, Ive never heard of shock bind nor have I ever seen someone make their own copies of these brackets. Spohn has another weird product out now, the pivoting sway bar end links. I thought you want those to be stiff.

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

Of course shocks bind. Any time you have a rubber bush in something that flexes it binds. But compared to all the other stuff it's very minor. I don't see the point of just turning the stock rubber bush through 90 degrees. If you wanted to eliminate bind you'd need a spherical bearing at each end of the shock. Maybe only a super fine tuning detail but it would look cool.

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

Same goes for the sway bar end links. Ideally they would all be spherical bearings too.

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

I would say no.

I would expect there to be more misalignment from the axle raising or lowering on one side than you would see it rotation front to back because of the length of the torque arm.

I dont see any real benefit. But curious what other more knowledgeable people think.

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

Thinking of how the axle moves: the stock set up seems better for roll only but this set up may be better for flat (no roll) up/down movement. But looks like you just slightly change which way it binds. Can't see any bang for the buck.

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

We sell the lower shock relocation kit which is actually the bottom part of our coilover kit.

There is some rotational movement of the axle and theoretically there is some binding there. Some guys like to get rid of that binding and we do sell a small number of kits just for this purpose. Huge difference? No. Minor difference and optimization? Yes.

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

The movement here is insignificant on a well sorted car with limited suspension movement due to firmness of springs and sway bars. I prefer the north/south OEM bolt position because it aids in lateral articulation of the axle.

A test for anyone- simply bolt in the bottom mount of the rear shock and see what kind of play you have already with the OEM mount....not needed. Just adding unsprung weight.

I'm building a fun little enduro car as we speak. Opening night is 3/28. We picked up North woods Inn as a primary sponsor for this year so funds are up on the nascar supertruck team.

I'm on my phone- can't post pics from it

Edit to add: Welcome to the Joe Dirt Dodge Neonator. 160hp, 1900lbs-12:1 power/weight ratio. She'll be pretty smashed up at the end of the year- but if everything goes as predicted we will easily win back prize money to pay for her and then some. Always fun racing on someone else's dime (Perks of racing in front of 7000 fans- entry fees pay royalties to racers)

Im the tall guy, Berk is on the far right. Berk is from Istanbul Turkey and is here in So Calif attending UCLA. I started helping him build his 502Ramjet 91 TransAm 6 years ago over phone call and internet messaging...Never realizing one day we would actually meet. He is a very good driver. I put him on my NASCAR team and we both codrove an endure last year and took 2nd with no practice and a borrowed car from my Mechanic Larry on the left (Out of 37 car field)> Great story and a great friend ship derived from here on TGO.

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

kinda makes sense to me, the shock is mounted with a bolt that cant move at all when the rear end moves up and down, but this will enable the shock to pivot on the bolt, should work!

Re: What do you all think? Useful or Gimmick?

they are just copying what Ford did on the Mustang GT in the late 80's, but i think they quit using that type of mount in favor of the cheaper and easier to assemble "bolt in a hole" mounting point that everyone else was using with their new body style in 94.

I am totally on board with you. I've seen tehse before, and you're just switching acceleration/braking binding with binding in corners by rotating it.

The rubber bushing allows movement in all directions, it's fine. They designed it that way so that it could handle all the articulations of hte rear axle. If you never turn, I think these are great.
