Stuck key

Hey guys,

I hope this is the right forum to post this in, if not mods please move it.

So i am having a problem with my key getting stuck in the ignition on my steering column. It started when the ignition switch down the column slipped and prevented the car from starting. So i readjusted the switch and all was well for a few days. Now the key sometimes gets stuck in the ignition when the key is in the off position and requires quite a bit of wiggling to release. Also the accessory position of the key, when you turn the key toward you, is impossible to get too. They key just wont turn the ignition that way.

My father thinks the wire connecting the tumbler to the switch down the column is twisted or has come off its spot near the tumbler.

Any thoughts on how to fix this? I was thinking of rebuilding the whole column but i've heard this is a nightmare. Also though of just relocating the ignition switch to the center console. Or replacing the switch with multiple toggle switches to the center console, race style (on switch controls starter, one controls ignition ect)

Thoughts? Solutions?

Thanks for any help
Bill

Re: Stuck key

The problem could be the ignition lock cylinder. Replacing the cylinder is not very expensive if you pull the wheel yourself. You will need a wheel puller and the tool to compress the plate under the steering wheel.
Once you pull the lock cylinder out you can test the cylinder with your key and see if it is you problem. If the cylinder is good check the gear inside where the lock cylinder was and see if it turns as the gears do break. I replaced quite a few of the gears that move the rod that connect to the ignition switch when i worked as a locksmith. You can move the gear the way the cylinder does with a pair of needlenose pliers and watch how the gear and rack that mate up with the rod you bent while trying to fix the problem.
There is also the possibity the ignition switch is going bad and binding. Once you get the cylinder out you will be able to trouble shoot the problem.
If you do a search on google you can find videos of taking apart a GM steering column.
