trouble connecting intermediate shaft to column

I replaced the steering column in my 91RS vert. Everything went perfectly EXCEPT I cannot reattach the intermediate shaft to the column. The connection is too tight. I pulled the intermediate shaft and fitted it against the old column and it is too tight to slide over that one as well. Any suggestion on how to address this would be greatly appreciated. I'm two bolts away from being on the road again.

Update: Ended up removing the intermediate shaft, heating up the end, reinstalled, and a few taps later was able to snug it up and make the connection
